1960 Rather Wet. A Mild Spring and Wet Autumn.
In the year that the first successful weather satellite was launched, a huge earthquake, measuring 9.5 on the Richter Scale, struck Chile, and 'Coronation Street' began broadcasting on Independent Televisiion. In the music world, the UK charts were dominated by the Everly Brothers 'Cathy's Clown' and Elvis Presley 'It's Now or Never' . Also, a pop group was re-named 'The Beatles' and began playing at a club in Hamburg.
Weather Notes:-
9th-11th August - 40 hours of rain at Brighton (East Sussex) produced a total of 125mm with temperatures hovering around 12°C.
24th August - 150mm of rain fell at Coleraine (County Londonderry).
7th October - In a month of heavy downpours and severe flooding, including 175mm in 5 days at Teignmouth (Devon), on this day,  Horncastle (Lincolnshire) had 178mm of rain in 3 hours.

January - Rather mild and dry with near normal sunshine.

The year started mostly dry and mild , and on the 4th the maximum temperature was 12°C. It then became colder with mist and fog slow to clear. Towards the end of the second week there was some heavy wet snow and on the 13th the temperature only reached 0.9°C.  It was milder after mid month, and apart from a few chilly, misty days, the rest of the month was mild. There was rain at times, much of it was light, but on the 24th over 11mm fell recorded.
 
February - Sunny and rather mild with above average rainfall.

Mild and unsettled weather predominated during the month but rainfall was mostly light.. Between the frontal systems there were several dry days with plenty of sunshine, and around mid month there was a brief colder interlude. The maximum temperature on the 13th was only 3.9°C. The last week of February continued changeable, and on the 25th nearly 9mm of rain fell. However, it became very mild, with the temperature on the 28th rising close to 15°C.

March - Very dull and rather mild with above average rainfall.

The first fortnight of March was rather cloudy but often dry. Temperatures were mostly close to average, but on the 8th the maximum value was only 4.2°C. Around mid month it became milder for a while, and on the 15th the temperature reached 14°C. Cloudy skies helped to keep many nights mild, although there were some rather cold nights after sunny days at the end of the third week. In a changeable end to the month, nearly 11mm of rain was recorded on the 29th.  

April Very dry and rather mild with above average sunshine.

There was plenty of dry weather during April,  although there were also a few dull and damp days. Rainfall  was generally light. however, on the 3rd, over 3mm of rain fell. There were some sunny days, especially towards the end of the third week. It became very mild, too, and on the 20th the maximum temperature was above 18°C. There was some rather cooler weather during the last week of April, and on the 25th, the maximum temperature was only 10.7°C.
 
May Warm with below average rainfall and sunshine.

The beginning of the month was cool,  and on both the 1st and 2nd the maximum temperature was only 10.2°C. A grass frost occurred on the morning of the 4th, but It warmed quickly at the end of the first week, and on the 7th the temperature exceeded 23°C. The weather during the remainder of May was changeable, but there were several dry, fairly sunny and warm days. Amounts of rain were mostly small, although nearly 12mm was measured on the 13th. 
 
June Sunny, warm and rather dry.

The first 5 days were sunny and warm, and on the 5th, the temperature rose above 28°C. It then became cooler and unsettled. A particularly cool and showery day occurred on the 13th but this was followed after mid month by a steady rise of temperature and plenty of sunshine. However, from the 22nd it became generally cooler again and more unsettled, and on the 23rd thundery showers gave over 8mm of rain, and on the 29th the maximum temperature was only 16.2°C.

Unsettled weather occurred throughout the month as several Atlantic depressions and associated frontal systems crossed the country bringing periods of rain.. On the 8th, over 10mm of rain fell, and generally the first half of July was cool or very cool with extensive cloud cover. The second half of the month was slightly better, and on the 28th the afternoon temperature reached average for the only time, and on the 31st there was a full day of sunshine.
  
August Cool and rather dry with below average sunshine.

This was a changeable month with no warm spells, although the temperature on the 7th reached 23°C. Much of the day was sunny on the 9th, but  on the 11th, it rained all day as a depression tracked slowly across southern Britain. A total rainfall of nearly 25mm was recorded and It was also very cool. The maximum temperature for the day was only 14.5°C. The remainder of August was mostly showery, but the heaviest showers generally missed the London area. 
 
September Wet and rather cool with slightly above average sunshine.

Apart from a brief spell of rather warm weather during the second week, including a maximum temperature above 23°C on the 11th, the weather was mostly cool and changeable. On the 1st, nearly 26mm of rain fell. Some sunny spells occurred, particularly during the second week, and again during the last week of September. However, the unsettled weather persisted, and it became cooler.  On the 30th, the afternoon temperature failed to rise above 13.0°C.

October - Very wet with below average sunshine and slightly above normal temperatures.

The first week was changeable but relatively warm. On the 2nd, the temperature rose close to 20°C. Thereafter, daytime temperatures remained close to, or a little below, normal for the rest of the month. There were only 6 days during October without measurable rain, and there were spells of heavy rain. On the 9th, nearly 25mm fell, and after a brief interlude of dry, cool weather rainy conditions returned. On the 17th, the temperature failed to rise above 10.7°C.

November Wet, but sunny and rather mild.

In an unsettled month that only had 7 days without measurable rain, the 1st was the wettest with over 20 mm falling.  The 1st was also the mildest day with the temperature exceeding 15°C. The often stormy nature of this frost-free month meant that the fast-moving rain-bearing  fronts were regularly interspersed with sun and isolated showers. In these sunnier interludes it was slightly cooler, and on both the 8th and 28th maximum temperatures were 7.6°C.

There was a mild and unsettled start to the month. On the 3rd, the temperature exceeded 12°C., and on the 4th, over 13mm of rain was recorded. It became colder during the second week with mist and fog at times, and on both the 11th and 13th the maximum temperature was only 3.8°C. Changeable weather returned after mid month with temperatures mostly close to normal, before colder weather,  with night frosts,  but also plenty of sunshine, arrived after Christmas.
