In the world of music, Radio Caroline began illegally broadcasting music from a ship moored off the English Suffolk coast, and the UK charts were dominated by the Beatles and Rolling Stones, although the longest chart topper was by Cilla Black with 'You're My World' which spent 4 weeks at Number One.
Weather Notes:-
2nd June - Midday temperatures at Birmingham and Manchester were only 7°C., and the maximum for the day at Rhayader (Powys) was only 7°C.
26th August - The temperature reached 30°C. at Margate (Kent), 31°C. at Skegness (Lincolnshire) and 33°C at Cromer (Norfolk).
14th/15th October - An area of low pressure moved slowly northeast over northern France and gave nearly 50mm of rain in the Isle of Wight and 63mm in 24hours at Folkestone (Kent).

January Very dry and dull with below average temperatures.

The first 10 days of January were mostly cloudy and misty but largely dry. Temperature were near, or slightly below normal. A short cold spell occurred during the second week. Snow fell on the 12th, and the maximum temperature on the 13th was only 0.8°C. After a foggy day on the 14th, it became generally brighter with sunny intervals and slowly rising temperatures. The end of the month was fairly mild and changeable. On the 28th, nearly 5mm of rain fell.

February - Dry and rather mild with near normal sunshine.

High pressure brought plenty of fine weather during February, although weak fronts produced cloudier days with some bands of light rain. The month was mild at first, and the high on the 2nd exceeded 12°C. After some sunny days and overnight frosts, it became colder and cloudier with northeast winds and occasional wintry showers. The high on the 19th was only 1.7°C. The end of the month was slightly milder and changeable. On the 29th, nearly 7mm of rain fell. 

March - Very wet, dull and cold.

The first week of March was mostly cold  with wintry showers and a fresh northeast wind. The temperature on the 7th only reached 2.3°C. The second week was changeable and milder, and the high on the 13th was near 14°C., but on the 15th, rain turned to sleet and gave a total of 26mm as cold air slowly encroached from the east. Nearly 15mm of rain fell on the 19th as milder air returned, but the rest of the month stayed mostly rather cold and changeable.

April - Dull and wet with temperatures close to average.

The beginning of April was cold and sunless with fresh northeast winds and a mixture of rain, drizzle and sleet. The temperature on both the 2nd and 3rd only reached 4.4°C. It became milder later in the first week, and although the weather was unsettled, some sunny days occurred. Rather warm southerlies  brought over 15mm of thundery rain fell on the 16th. The rest of the month was changeable, apart from a brief sunny and warm interlude on the 26th and 27th. 

May - Warm with below average rainfall and slightly above normal sunshine.

Although the 1st  of May was a dry day with sunny periods, the temperature failed to rise above 13.7°C., the coolest day of the month. The weather was changeable, but with only slightly higher temperatures until the 11th. On the 12th it was sunny with a high of 24°C. before unsettled weather returned. The last week of the month became warm with highs typically 20 to 22°C., and nearly 25°C. on the 30th. However, it became wet on the 31st with over 12mm of rain falling.

June - Very wet, dull and rather cold.

The 1st and 2nd were both dull and very cool days with highs of only just above 12°C. It then became warmer, but unsettled. On the 10th, it was sunny with a maximum temperature of 25°C., but although it remained changeable, amounts of rain became mostly small until the middle of the third week. On the 18th, over 30mm of rain fell with a high of only 16°C. The 20th and 21st were even cooler, but no measurable rain fell after the 20th, and it became warmer.

July - Rather warm, dry and sunny.

The early part of July was dry with sunshine, and average temperatures.  On the 8th, 7mm of rain fell, the first of the month, as the weather became rather cool and changeable. On the 14th, the high was 26°C., and after mid month there was plenty of dry, sunny and warm weather. The high on both the 16th and 17th was over 27°C, but it then turned less warm with thundery showers. Over 28mm of rain fell on the 21st. but the rest of July was mostly dry, bright and fairly warm.  

August - Rather dry and sunny with near normal temperatures.

A ridge of high pressure built across the country early in August and between the 2nd and 6th it was dry with sunshine and highs between 24 and 27°C. A cooler, cyclonic interlude then occurred, and although there was plenty of dry weather, on the 18th, nearly 25mm of rain fell, and on the 19th the maximum temperature was only 15.1°C. There was a warm spell between the 25th and 27th, and the temperature on the 26th reached 28°C. It then became cooler, but sunny.

September - Very sunny, dry and rather warm.

The beginning of September was dry, warm and sunny. The temperature on the 4th almost reached 25°C., and on the 10th it was only a fraction of a degree cooler. The first measurable rain of the month occurred on the 14th as Atlantic fronts introduced cooler, changeable and sometimes windy, weather. On the 15th, nearly 6mm of rain fell, and on the 21st the temperature only reached 15.6°C. There was further, dry, sunny and warm weather during the last week.

October - Dry sunny and cool.

The first 5 days of October were dry, sunny and warm. The temperature on the 5th reached 20°C. The weather then became unsettled and cooler. Over 7mm of rain fell on the 7th, and highs during the second week were typically between 10 and 12°C. A frost occurred on the night of the 12th/13th and a wet day on the 14th with nearly 9mm falling was accompanied by a high of 9°C.It then became dry and rather mild , although a high of only 8.6°C. occurred on the 24th.

November - Dry and mild with slightly above average sunshine.

High pressure dominated the weather until the beginning of the second week and it was mainly dry, but with fresh northeast winds at times. On the 10th, it stayed foggy all day and the temperature failed to rise above 5°C. It then became unsettled and mild. On the 16th, nearly 8mm of rain fell, but with high pressure close by to the south, rain was generally light. The maximum temperature on the 18th was above 15°C., but the end of the month was cold and frosty.

December - Sunny, rather cold and dry.

Northwesterly winds brought some cold weather early in December,  and the maximum temperature on the 4th was only 3°C. It became milder at the end of the first week, and the temperature on the 9th exceeded 14°C. It was unsettled and windy at times, and on the 13th over 10mm of rain fell. Towards mid month it became colder and more settled with some frost. There was snow after Christmas, and the high on the 28th was only 1.1°C., but it then became milder.
