1966 Dull and Wet. A Wet Summer.
In the year that Indira Gandhi was elected Prime Minister of India, Malawi and Botswana became independent countries, Harold Wilson led the Labour Party to victory in the UK General Election, and England won the football World Cup. In the world of music, Jim Reeves wth 'Distant drums' spent 5 weeks at Number One in the UK charts, and the Christmas hit, 'The Green, Green, Grass of Home' by Tom Jones eventually spent 7 weeks in the top spot.
Weather Notes:-
14th April - Wet snow fell for much of the day across southern England with 10  to 15 cm lying by evening. 
21st July - The maximum temperature was 27°C. at Glasgow and 29°C at Perth. On the same day, parts of East Anglia had highs of only 14°C. and 25mm of rain.
17th December - The 199mm of rain that fell in Dalness (Highland) is thought to be the highest daily total for December recorded in Britain.

January Dry, rather cold and dull.

The month began changeable, breezy and fairly mild. However, towards the end of the first week the weather became more settled. It stayed rather mild, but then easterly winds brought colder air. On both the 10th and 11th, the temperature failed to rise above 1°C.  Snow occurred around mid month and the high on the 19th was only minus 2°C. The cold spell ended at the beginning of the fourth week leaving the remainder of the month mild, cloudy and damp. 

February - Very mild, dull and wet

The temperature rose above 13°C. on the first 2 days of the month, and daily maxima were above 10°C. throughout the first week. On the 8th, the temperature approached 14°C. During the second week it became cold with flurries of snow, and on the 13th the maximum temperature was only 2°C. However, cloudy nights prevented sub-zeo minima in this frost-free month. Mild weather returned on the 19th, and the remainder of the month was unsettled and often windy. 

March - Very dry, mild and rather dull.

High pressure dominated the weather through the first week, although a cold front produced 3mm of rain on the 3rd. It was mild and there was plenty of sunshine. The second week was rather unsettled, although amounts of rain were small. Around mid month, an anticyclone became dominant again, and although skies were often rather cloudy, no measurable rain fell between the 12th and the 23rd. The last week of the month was often cool, breezy and showery.

April - Very dull and wet with temperatures slightly above normal.

After a mostly dull and rather cold start to April it became milder and unsettled but with some sun. Cool easterly winds developed during the second week with highs around 6°C. However, on the 14th, wet snow fell, temporarily lying to a depth of nearly 10cm and giving the equivalent of nearly 12mm of rain. The high for the day was only 3°C. It the became slowly milder, and on the last 2 days of the month it was sunny with temperatures exceeding 20°C.

May - Wet with sunshine and temperatures close to average.

The first 3 days of the month were very warm and sunny, and on the 2nd, the temperature rose close to 26°C. It then turned very much cooler and unsettled. On the 11th a slow-moving cold front gave 14mm of rain. A brief warm interlude occurred around  mid month, and the high on the 16th was 22°C., before further Atlantic fronts brought a return to changeable weather. During the last week it became settled, and although not warm, there were some sunny days.

June - Warm and rather wet with near normal sunshine.

The first 4 days of the month were warm, and although it became temporarily cooler, very warm or hot weather returned during the second week. On the 10th, the temperature rose above 27°C. even though there was a brisk northeast wind blowing. Thunderstorms gave the first measurable rain of the month later on the 10th, and the weather became generally more unsettled. However, temperatures remained mostly well above normal until late in the third week.

July - Rather cool, dull and wet.

The opening days of July were mainly dry, sunny and rather warm. From the 5th, the weather became unsettled with temperatures near, or rather below, normal. On the 19th, it rained for most of the day and the maximum temperature was only 15°C. The rest of the month was mainly cool and changeable with a mixture of, rain-bands, sunshine and showers. Some of the showers were heavy and thundery, and on the 29th, nearly 24mm of rain was recorded.

August - Rather cool and wet with slightly above average sunshine.

The first day of the month was very cool and showery, with a high of only 16°C. The rest of the opening week remained poor with over 30mm of rain falling and temperatures not exceeding 20°C. The second week was drier and slightly warmer, and it then became settled for a while. On the 19th, the temperature exceeded 27°C, but a thundery breakdown gave 30mm of rain on the 21st and then after a cool, cloudy but dry, spell, nearly 30mm of rain fell on the 30th.

September - Dry and rather warm with above average sunshine.

Atlantic weather systems brought bands of rain, but there were sunny periods,too, and temperatures were mostly above normal. On the 5th and 7th, the afternoon highs were above 22°C.  No measurable rain fell from the 15th to the 30th, and although it was cooler and rather cloudy  at first, sunshine returned and temperatures rose. On both the 20th and 21st highs were close to 22°C. The last day of the month was cool and wet with 7mm of rain falling. 

October - Mild, dull and wet.

Low pressure was prominent at the start of the month, and over 20mm of rain fell during the first 3 days. It was fairly mild, though, and on the 3rd and 4th the temperature reached 19°C. South to southeast winds continued to give mild and unsettled weather until the end of third week before a change to drier, colder northwest winds took place. On the 23rd, 24th and 27th the temperatures failed to rise above 9°C, with the chilly weather then persisting until the end if the month.

November - Rather wet with below average temperatures and normal sunshine.

The start of the month was rather cold with some sun but chilly northeast winds. After rain on the 6th, the winds veered southeast and it became milder. The high on both the 7th and 8th was 15°C. The second week was cooler but mainly dry, although  it became changeable and windy later. After mid month there were several rather cold and cloudy days with brisk northeast winds. On the 24th it was cold and foggy all day, followed by a windy and changeable last week.

December - Mild and rather wet with below average sunshine.

The first fortnight of December was unsettled, and sometimes very windy, as a series of Atlantic weather systems crossed the country. It was mostly rather mild, although the 8th was very mild with a high of 13°C. There were sunny spells, but after mid month, although pressure was higher and winds were lighter, there was less sunshine. However, it was mild and rainfall was light. Mild, damp west or southwest winds then persisted throughout the remainder of the year
