1969 Rather Dry and Cool. A Very Dry early Autumn.
In the year that Charles de Gaulle stepped down as President of France to be replaced by Georges Pompidou, Willy Brandt became Chancellor of West Germany, and Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. In the world of music, the Woodstock Festival was held in New York State and the Archies topped the British charts for 8 weeks with 'Sugar, Sugar'.
Weather Notes:-
7th February - Blizzards of fine powdery snow  occurred as strong northerly winds enveloped the country. A gust of 118kn was recorded at Kirkwall (Orkney) and the maximum temperature at Lerwick (Shetland) was minus 6°C.
20th April - Minimum temperature overnight 19th/20th was minus 6°C. at Gatwick Airport (West Sussex).
28th July - Elbridge, north of Saltash (Cornwall) had over 145mm of rain

High pressure dominated the weather at first bringing plenty of dry weather with temperatures mostly above normal. At the end of the first week, it became very cyclonic, and on the 6th, there was sleet  for a while with a high of only 2°C. Changeable, and often wet, weather prevailed until the end of the third week. Temperatures were on the mild side of normal,  but it then became drier and mostly very mild, and the highs on both  the 22nd and 23rd were 13°C.

February - Very cold with above average sunshine and near normal rainfall.

It was rather cloudy during the first week, but with temperatures mostly not far from normal. Rain briefly turned to snow late on the 6th as cold northerlies set in, and on the 7th swirling powdery snow fell. The northerlies eased during the second week and snow readily turned to rain on the 11th. However, snow returned on the 12th, and there was heavy wet snow on the 19th. It then became milder for a while before a cold and damp end to the month. 

March - Very wet, rather dull and cold.

The first week was mainly dry, and although dull and cold at first, it became fairly sunny and milder but with severe frosts. Overnight on the 6th/7th the minimum temperature was close to minus 8°C. During the second week it became dull and wet, but after a cold start temperatures rose above average. Cold northeasterlies returned on the 16th with a high of only 3°C., and cloudy, rather cold, and often wet, weather persisted until westerlies returned on the 29th.

April - Very dry and sunny with temperatures close to normal.

There was no measurable rain during the first 10 days of April, and although rather cold at first with some sharp frosts, it became warm with highs above 20°C. on the 7th,8th and 9th. It became cooler and changeable from the 10th.  However, pressure remained fairly high and rain was mostly light. It became colder for a while after mid month, and the low on the night of the 19th/20th was near minus 4°C. The last 10 days of the month were mostly cool and unsettled.

May - Rather dull with above normal rainfall and slightly below average temperatures.

The start of May was unsettled and mostly cool. On both the 4th and 6th, the temperature only rose to 13°C. On the 11th, warmer, and more humid, southerly winds developed, and on the 13th, the temperature reached 26°C. However, a sunless day on the 14th was accompanied by a high of only 15°C as cooler westerly winds returned. There were showers, or longer spells of rain, during the remainder of the month, and the high on the 18th was only 10°C.

June - Dry, sunny and rather cool.

The first 3 days of June were rather cool and unsettled. No measurable rain fell from the 4th to the 15th but it was cool at first and on both the 4th and 5th the high was only 13°C. As the anticyclone moved over the country there were ground frosts, and the low on the morning of the 7th was 1.5°C. It then became warmer with a high above 25°C. on the 13th. After mid month it turned cool, unsettled and often windy, but the last few days of the month became fine and warm.

July - Rather warm, wet and sunny.

Most of the first week was fine and warm, but the 6th was dull and wet with 33mm of rain and a high of only 16°C. It stayed rather cool until the 10th, but it then became very warm and humid. On the 16th, the temperature rose above 31°C., but  fresher weather followed on the 16th,, although it remained mostly warm or very warm until the 28th. No measurable rain fell from 11th to the 28th, but over 30mm of rain fell on the 29th and it then became much cooler.

August - Wet and rather dull with temperatures close to average.

There was a rather cool and changeable start to the month, and thunderstorms on the night of the 2nd/3rd produced 57mm of rain. Towards the end of the first week it became settled and pleasantly warm, and during the second week it became hot, with the high on the 11th near 30°C. A thundery breakdown to cooler weather followed, and although there were a few fine and warm days after mid month, the end of August was rather cool and unsettled.
September - Very dry, dull and rather warm.

No measurable rain fell during the first fortnight of September, and although there were several rather cool and cloudy days, there were also spells of sunshine, and on both the 11th and 12th temperatures reached around 23°C. After mid month, it became changeable, but rainfall amounts were very small. On the 29th, around 1mm of rain fell, and it became much cooler. After a high of only 14°C. on the 29th, there was an air frost on the morning of the 30th.  

October - Very dry, mild and rather sunny.

The first fortnight was mainly sunny and often pleasantly warm. The temperature reached 20°C on several days, and on the 9th a high above 24°C. was recorded. A little over 1mm of rain fell early on the 14th, the first measurable rain of the month, and light rain fell at the end of the third week. However, daily maxima continued to nudge 20°C., and on the 20th the high was close to 22°C. The last 2 days of the month became cooler with highs of only 13°C.

November - Rather cool, sunny and wet.

There was a very mild first 3 days, and on the 2nd, the high was close to 18°C. It became cooler during the 4th, and on the 7th the maximum temperature was only 7°C. Unsettled weather prevailed, and from the second week it was windy with some heavy rain at times, especially around mid month. Overnight on the 27th/28th, cold northerly winds developed, and on both the 28th and 29th snow fell, with a low early on the morning of the 30th of just minus 6°C. 

December - Very dull, cold and rather dry.

The sun failed to shine on the first 3 days of December, although the 3rd was mild with a high near 12°C. It then became cold but still fairly cloudy. On the 15th, it was a rare sunny day with nearly 7 hours of sun, but on the 17th snow fell with a high of only 2°C. Most of the third week was cold but it became milder, damp and often breezy, from the 20th until after Christmas. From the 27th it was very cold with some snow, and the high on he 31st was only 1°C.
