1970 Rather Cool and Sunny.
In the year that the construction of the first bridge across the Bosphorus began, Salvador Allende became the democratically elected President of Chile, and the Conservative Party, under Edward Heath, won the UK General Election. In the world of music, The Isle of Wight Festival attracted over 500.000 spectators, The Beatles disbanded and Jimi Hendrix died, aged 28. The UK charts were dominated by Mungo Jerry and 'Summertime' which spent 7 weeks at Number One.
Weather Notes:-
4th March - Heavy snow fell as a depression moved east across southern England. Snow turned to rain for a while from London southwards, but Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire locally had level falls in excess of 40cm.
22nd April - Heavy rain fell in the Lake District including nearly 100mm at Great Langdale and over 180mm at Seathwaite.
17th August - A wide area of northeast Scotland between Inverness and Aberdeen had 3 days with heavy rain. Over 120mm fell in places resulting in severe flooding. On this day, the maximum temperature at Kinloss (Moray ) was only 12°C.

The year began dull and cold, and towards the end of the first week some snow fell with severe overnight frosts. on the morning of the 7th, the temperature fell below minus 9°C. The high on the 8th was only 1°C., but the cold spell quickly ended with a high near 10°C. recorded on the following day. Rather mild and changeable weather then prevailed for the remainder of the month, but although skies were often cloudy, amounts of rain were mostly small.
 
February - Very sunny and rather cold with near normal rainfall.

The first fortnight of February was rather cold and showery but with plenty of sunshine between the showers. Winds were predominantly from the north, although a few interludes of milder and cloudier southwest winds occurred. On the 12th, snow fell for most of the day with a high of only 1°C. It became milder from the 17th as a series of Atlantic fronts crossed the country. On the 22nd the high exceeded 12°C. but the end of the month was rather cold again.  

March - Cold with sunshine and rainfall close to normal.

Cold northwest winds brought sunshine and wintery showers during the first 10 days, and on the 4th, a mixture of rain, sleet and snow gave 9mm of measured rain with a maximum temperature of only 2°C. Around 8cm of wet snow lay on the ground for a while in the morning. After an unsetlled spell at the end of the second week,  strong ridges of high pressure developing  between Atlantic fronts gave several dry, fairly sunny, but often rather cold,  days. 
 
April - Cold, wet and rather dull.

The opening fortnight of April was mainly cold, cloudy and changeable. Heavy rain occurred at times, with some sleet, as active weather systems crossed southern England followed by fresh or strong northerly winds. At the end of the second week, mild southwest winds developed, and the temperature on the 16th reached 16°C. West or northwest winds returned during the third week, but generally temperatures were not far from average.

May - Dry and  rather warm with above average sunshine

Southerly winds blew during early May bringing plenty of dry, sunny and rather warm weather with afternoon highs typically between 20 and 23°C. There was a little thundery rain at the end of the first week, and the second week was cooler and unsettled. On the 10th, it rained for most of the day, amounting to more than 9mm of rain. Mostly fine weather returned after mid month. There were lengthy spells of sunshine, and after a cool start, it became rather warm. 

June - Sunny, warm and dry.

The first week of June was dry, and it became increasingly warm. On the 8th, the afternoon temperature reached 29°C. It then became somewhat cooler as south to southeast winds backed northeasterly. On the 16th, the high was only 17°C. Warm and sunny weather returned on the 18th, but Atlantic fronts pushed eastwards on the 23rd, bringing cloudier skies, some rain, and temperatures close to normal. This unsettled weather lasted for the rest of the month.

July - Rather cool with above average rainfall and near normal sunshine.

There was a cool and showery beginning to July, and on both the 2nd and 3rd the maximum temperature was only 17°C. It became very warm at the end of the first week, and the high on the 7th was over 31°C. Unsettled and cooler weather returned, although highs on both the 12th and 13th were close to 27°C. The 14th was cool and wet, and although there were sunny spells, the second half of the month was then mostly rather cool and changeable.

August - Sunshine slightly above normal with rainfall and temperature close to average

The first 4 days of August were very warm with highs close to 27°C. The remainder of the opening week was warm but there were thundery downpours. Nearly 17mm of rain fell on the 6th. The second week was changeable but there were several rather warm and sunny days. It then became rather cool, and on the 19th there were periods of rain with the temperature only rising to 16°C. The last week of the month was mainly dry and sunny, and it became rather warm.

September - Rather warm with above average sunshine and rainfall.

After an unsettled start to September, it became mainly dry, sunny and warm for a while with afternoon temperatures typically around 22 or 23°C. The second week was cooler, unsettled and often quite windy as Atlantic depressions crossed the British Isles. A return to sunny and rather warm weather occurred after mid month, and the temperature on the 20th exceeded 25°C. Mostly sunny and warm weather then continued, although the 30th was damp and cooler.

October - Very dry and rather warm with slightly above average sunshine.

The beginning of October was changeable, but amounts of rain were small and there were lengthy sunny periods. It was mild at first, but at the end of the first week it became temporarily rather cool. The second week was mainly dry with sunny periods, although mist was sometimes slow to lift. On the 11th, 12th and 13th  highs were around 20°C, On the 19th, clearer air spread from the north, and the high on the 21st was only 9°C, but the end of the month was milder. 

November - Very wet and rather mild with above normal sunshine.

A series of Atlantic weather fronts crossed the British Isles during the first 3 weeks of November bringing a mixture of heavy rain and sunny spells. It was mild at first, and the high on the 2nd almost reached 17°C. It was often windy, but during the last 10 days of the month high pressure developed and winds decreased. During the final week the anticyclone moved to the east, and in the resulting southerlies, the temperature reached 15°C.on the 24th, 25th and 26th. 
 
December - Rather dry and cold with below average sunshine.

December began unsettled, breezy and mild with highs between 10 and 12°C. An area of high pressure built across the country on the 8th, and it then became mainly dry but often rather cloudy. Temperatures were close to normal but it became mild again around mid month as changeable westerlies temporarily returned. During the last week of December sleet and snow fell at times with daytime temperatures only rising to between zero and 3°C.
