1976 Dry and Sunny with a Very Good Summer and Wet Autumn.
In the year that the first commercial flights of the Concorde Airliner took place between London and Bahrain, and Paris and Rio de Janiero; Harold Wilson resigned as British Prime Minister and was replaced by James Callaghan; and Jimmy Carter beat Gerald Ford to become American President. In the world of music, Brotherhood of Man won the Eurovision Song Contest for Britain with 'Save Your Kisses For Me', and then spent 6 weeks at the top of the charts. There were also 6 weeks at the number One spot for Elton John and Kiki Dee with 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart, and Abba with 'Dancing Queen'.
Weather Notes:-
2nd January - Severe gales, with a gust of over 90kn at Wittering (near Peterborough) led to 21 fatalities and the worst flooding since 1953 along eastern coastal counties with high tides on the 3rd locally over 6m above normal.
28th June - On the 6th of 15 consecutive days with a maximum temperature of 32°C., or higher, somewhere in the country, the high in the enclosure at Mayflower Park, Southampton, reached 35.6°C.
22nd September - In a month of very wet weather, on this day 50mm fell at Exmouth (Devon), 54mm at Blackpool (Lancashire) and nearly 60mm at Liverpool.

January Very dry, mild and sunny.

After a damp day on the 1st, there were gales, and further rain, on the 2nd, but it was mild with a high close to 13°C. On the 4th, nearly 6mm of rain fell, but although unsettled weather continued into the second week, rainfall was light. It remained mild with temperatures nudging 13°C. at times between the 9th and 12th. No measurable rain fell between the 6th and 18th, but it became changeable again, and from the 23rd it was colder with a little snow and frosty nights. 

February - Dry and dull with temperatures slightly above average.

Snow fell on the first day of the month with a brisk east wind and a high of only 0°C. Further drizzle and snow occurred during most of a dull and cold first week, before westerly winds returned on the 8th. More than 13mm of rain fell on the 12th as a depression moved into the southern North Sea, but then pressure rose. Very little rain fell during the remainder of the month, and although cold for a while, highs were close to 15°C. on the 24th, 25th and 29th. 

March - Very dry, sunny and rather cold.

No measurable rain fell during the first 10 days of March, but although mild and sunny at first, a cold east wind developed for a while, and on the 7th there were flurries of snow with a high of only 3°C. It was changeable at times during the second and third weeks, although daily rainfall failed to exceed 3mm. It was mostly rather cold or cold, but it became milder during the last week, and on the 28th, a day of sunshine lifted the temperature above 14°C. 

April - Very dry and sunny with temperatures close to average.

The opening fortnight of April was mostly cool and changeable, although there were some mild and sunny days. Rain was mostly light, but on the 14th, over 5mm of rain was recorded. No more measurable rain fell during the month, and during the third week there was plenty of sunshine with afternoon temperatures close to 18°C on several days. However, cool and rather cloudy northeast winds then developed, and the high on the 27th was only 9°C.

May - Dry and rather warm with above average sunshine.

The first 5 days of May were changeable, but with only light rain and with temperatures close to normal. On the 6th, the temperature reached 23°C., and on the following day the high was above 28°C. There were many sunny days, and although it became cooler and unsettled from the middle of the second week until the end of the month,  there were further lengthy sunny periods. On the 20th, heavy showers gave 6mm of rain with a high only around 16°C. 

June - Very warm, dry and sunny.

Rain fell on the 1st, and a cool northerly wind gave highs of only 16°C. on both the 2nd and 3rd. Thereafter, it was mainly dry, and it became warmer. The start of the second week was hot, and the high on the 9th was 31°C. After a cooler interlude the end of the second week was very warm, although the high on the 16th was only 17°C. On the 20th, nearly 7mm of rain fell, but from the 22nd until the end June it was hot and sunny. The high on the 27th was over 34°C.

July - Very sunny, warm and dry.

The first 8 days of July were dry, sunny and hot, apart from a few spots of thundery rain on the 4th. Temperatures rose above 30°C. on each day, and above 33°C. on the 4th. The second week was unsettled, but still mostly warm or very warm. Thunderstorms produced 15mm of rain on the 16th, and temperatures fell close to normal at the end of the third week. No measurable rain fell after the 20th and there were several more sunny and very warm days.

August - Very sunny, dry and warm.

The opening 2 weeks of August were dry and mainly sunny. It was rather warm or warm at first, but at the end of the second week it became hot with afternoon highs above 29°C. It remained sunny and very warm after mid month and on both the 24th and 25th, the afternoon temperature rose close to 30°C. The last few days of the month were cooler with occasional rain, and on the 30th, the temperature failed to rise above 19°C., with the 31st only a degree warmer. 

September - Wet with below normal sunshine and near average temperatures.

There was an unsettled start to the month, and on the 2nd there were cool northwesterly winds and a high of only 15°C. However, at the end of the first week it was fine with an afternoon temperature near 24°C. on the 6th, 7th and 8th. The second week was rather cool and changeable, and on the 13th, the high was only 12°C. Temperatures rose again at the end of the third week, and in a very unsettled end to the month highs were typically 20 to 22°C. 

October - Dull, wet and rather mild.

The first week was very unsettled but fairly warm with afternoon highs between 16 and 19°C. Further pleasantly warm days occurred during the second week as the changeable weather continue, and on the 11th, the high was above 19°C. Over 17mm of rain fell on the 14th as a depression moved east across southern England, and it became generally duller, wetter and cooler after mid month. On the 29th, the maximum temperature was only 10°C.

November - Rather wet with above average sunshine and near normal temperatures.

A series of Atlantic weather systems crossed the country bringing bands of rain alternating with sunny periods and a few showers. Temperatures were near average, but on the 5th, the maximum was close to 13°C. On the 12th, it rained all day, resulting in over 15mm of rain and a maximum temperature of only 7°C. A spell of mostly dry, dull, anticyclonic weather then developed, but a wet end to November produced  over 18mm of rain on the last day of the month.  

December - Cold, sunny and rather wet.

The beginning of December was very changeable, and often windy and rather cold. During the second week, high pressure became established bringing sunshine at first followed by dull, mainly dry, but rather cold, weather. On the 17th, it became cold and wet, and this dull and damp weather persisted until Christmas although it became milder. On the 22nd the high almost reached 10°C. It was cold for a while during the last week with frost and a little snow.
