1977 Mostly Cool and Dull Summer, but a Fine Autumn
In the year that Jimmy Carter replaced Gerald Ford as the president of the USA, a tragedy occurred in Tenerife when 2 Jumbo jets collided on the runway killing 583 persons, making it the worst aviation disaster in history, and the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth the Second was celebrated. In the music world, Elvis Presley dies in Memphis, and the UK charts are dominated by Abba 'Knowing You Knowing Me' and Wings 'Mull of Kintyre' the Christmas number 1.
Weather Notes:-
19th January - First known snow fell in Miami (Florida).
16th/17th August - Torrential thundery rain occurred across southern England, including 115mm at Chalfont St Peters (Buckinghamshire).
18th October - The temperature reached 24°C. Penyffridd (Gwynedd)
27th-30th November - At Glasgow (Abbotsinch) Airport dense freezing fog persisted through much of this period with temperatures at, ot below, freezing throughout these 4 days. On the 28th the maximum temperature was only minus 3°C.

January - Rather cold and wet with below average sunshine.

The first week was unsettled and rather mild, but rainfall was generally light. An active cold front crossed the country on the 9th and as winds turned northerly it became much colder. Sleet and snow fell at times during the second week but after mid month it became somewhat milder, although remaining changeable. Low pressure then dominated the weather until the 28th bringing mild, often windy, weather. The last few days of January were cold but fairly sunny.   

February - Mild, wet and rather sunny.

Southwesterly winds dominated the weather during February bringing a succession of frontal systems across the country. It was windy at times but also mild, although on the 1st the maximum temperature was only 4°C.  Rainfall amounts were mostly small but on the 9th over 10mm fell. There was plenty of sunshine between rain bands and daytime temperatures were typically between 10 and 12°C.The end of the month was dry and temperatures were near average.

March - Mild and rather wet with slightly above average sunshine.

A warm front moving northeastwards on the 1st introduced exceptionally mild air on the 2nd. The maximum temperature was only a fraction short of 19°C. It remained mostly very mild, and frequently sunny, until the middle of the second week when somewhat cooler and more unsettled weather arrived from the west. From the 20th until the end of the month it was generally rather cold and changeable, and on the 28th the maximum temperature was only 5°C.
April - Dry and rather cold with above average sunshine.

High pressure remained close to the British Isles through most of April, and although fronts crossed the London area from time to time, most of the rainfall  was light.  Winds were frequently from between west and northwest during the month and this brought several sunny days, but temperatures were generally depressed and there were many frosty nights, especially during the first fortnight.  However, the afternoon temperature rose close to 17°C. on the 22nd.
May - Cool,  rather dry and sunny.

The first half of the month was cool. or very cool, and rather cloudy with rain at times. The maximum temperature was only 11°C. on both the 3rd and 5th. High pressure became more influential after mid month, but although it was dry with plenty of sunshine,  winds were often fairly  fresh and generally from a rather cool northeasterly direction. However, temperatures rose to 23°C. on both the 26th and 28th and there was no measurable rain after the 16th.  

June - Very cool and dull with above average rainfall

The month began mostly sunny and reasonably warm. On the 3rd the temperature almost reached 23°C. On the 5th it became cooler, cloudier and unsettled. The 10th was a particularly unpleasant day with periods of rain and a maximum of temperature of just 14°C.  On the 14th nearly 19mm of  rain fell,  and maximum temperatures of only 13°C. occurred on 4 of the days between the 15th and the 20th.  On the last 10 days of the month it was warmer, drier and sunnier. 
July - Very dry and rather sunny with temperatures slightly below average

Apart from a little rain on the 1st, the first week was dry, sunny and warm or very warm. On the 3rd the temperature rose close to 28°C. The second week was cloudier,  as cooler northeast winds developed. On the 13th there was even a little rain, and on both the 13th and 14th the maximum temperature was only 17°C. After mid month it was unsettled and often rather cool but amounts of rain remained small, and on most days there were lengthy sunny spells. 
August - Very wet, cool and dull.

It was a warm beginning to the month with a maximum temperature of 25°C. on both the 1st and 2nd. At the end of the first week, cooler unsettled weather spread from the west, and on the 8th the high was only 16°C. Warm, sunny weather followed, almost lasting until mid month. On the night of the 16th/17th there was torrential thundery rain amounting to 48mm. On the 19th,  the high was just 14°C., and most of the rest of August stayed unsettled, cool and breezy. 

September - Very dry, rather cool and dull.

An unsettled first week gave 7mm of rain on the 2nd, and further light rain occurred into the start of the second week,  but pressure then built and it became dry and quite sunny. On the 11th, 14th and 15th  the temperature rose close to 22°C. After mid month the centre of the anticyclone moved to the north of Scotland bringing rather cloudy, cool but still mainly dry weather. The last week of the month became warmer and sunnier, with a high of 21°C. on the 27th. 
October - Mild and sunny with near normal rainfall.

The weather during the first fortnight was cyclonic and unsettled.. However, rainfall amounts were mostly small and there was plenty of sunshine with temperatures close to normal. During the third week, warm southeasterly winds blew, and on both the 14th and 20th temperatures almost reached 19°C.  On the 21st,  thundery rain gave a  total of 31mm, but it remained mild and there were further sunny days before wet weather on the 31st ushered in a change to cooler air. 
November - Very sunny and rather mild with below average rainfall.

The first week was unsettled. On the 9th it became quite warm as moist southwesterly winds developed behind a warm front. On the 10th, sunny spells formed and lifted temperatures to 18°C. before cooler air arrived from the west on the following day. From mid month, winds were frequently strong northwesterlies. Temperatures  were below normal, and on the 21st the high was only 5°C. The last few days of the month were mainly dry and anticyclonic. 
December - Mild with sunshine and rainfall  close to average.

The opening week was rather cold and unsettled as Atlantic fronts and low pressure slowly displaced eastwards an area of high pressure.  The anticyclone rebuilt towards the end of the second week bringing southerly winds, dry weather and temperatures near or a little above normal. It became unsettled from the 21st,  and on the 23rd the maximum temperature was near 16°C. After Christmas winds turned northwesterly and it became cooler.
