1978 Rather Cold. Cool Summer and Dry Autumn.
In the year that the oil tanker 'Amoco Cadiz' ran aground on rocks off the coast of Brittany with the resulting spillage causing much damage to marine life, Pope John Paul the Second became the first ever Polish Pope and The states of Tuvalu and Solomon Islands became independent from the United Kingdom. In the world of music, John Travolta and Olivia Newton John dominated the charts with 2 records, 'You're the One that I Want' and 'Summer Nights' spending a total of 16 weeks at Number One in the UK Charts.
Weather Notes:-
29th January - A depression moved east across central Britain between the 27th and 29th bringing heavy snow to Scotland and the higher ground of northern England. Over 40cms was measured in the Southern Uplands, 60cms in Aviemore (Highland) and over 15cms for a while at Glasgow Airport.
19th February - Slow-moving front gave heavy rain and snow over southwest England and South Wales. Over 50mm of rain was recorded at Teignmouth and Torquay (both Devon) and on Dartmoor 1m of level snow fell. Over 30cms of snow fell on the coasts of North Devon and South Wales.  
29th December - Large temperature contrast across parts of Northwest Europe as a series of cold fronts edged slowly south. Midday temperatures were 0°C in Glasgow, but 11°C in London; minus 6°C in Copenhagen and 10°C in Amsterdam; and minus 4°C in Berlin and 10°C in Cologne.

January Wet and rather cold with near normal sunshine.

The first 10 days of the month were changeable, but rainfall was mostly light with temperatures generally above normal. On the 11th, nearly 23mm of rain was recorded as a deepening depression crossed southern Britain. Rain turned to wet snow in it's wake, and the maximum temperature on the 12th was only 3°C. After several rather cold days with frosty nights, further snow fell on the 17th and 19th. The rest of the month was unsettled, and still rather cold at times.

February - Dull and rather cold with above average rainfall.

The beginning of February was mostly rather mild and changeable. However, easterly winds developed during the 7th and it became much colder with occasional snow. Daily maximum temperatures between the 9th and 12th were only around 1°C. Daytime temperatures then rose to 4 or 5°C., although there were further frosty nights. It became  milder on the 22nd, and the afternoon high on the 23rd was above 14°C. The remainder of the month was mild and unsettled.

March - Rather mild and wet with above average sunshine.

After a changeable start to March, high pressure developed during the first week and the weather became sunny and rather mild but with some frosty nights. The second week was less sunny, but on the 10th and 11th  the temperature rose to 16°C. It then became cooler, unsettled and often windy. On the 16th, over 13mm of rain fell and showers became wintery. The last 2 weeks of March stayed windy and rather cool with showers or longer spells of rain.   

April - Cold and dull with above average rainfall.

High pressure developed acros the country during the first week, and although it was dull and cold for a while, the week ended milder with unbroken sunshine. The second week was cold and showery with some of the showers falling as snow. There were several sharp frosts. On the 13th nearly 10mm of rain fell and the high was only 6°C. Cold and changeable weather continued after mid month, although the 24th was a mild and sunny day with a high of 17°C.

May - Very wet and rather cold with above average sunshine.

The 1st of May was dull and wet with a high of only 11°C. The following day was a degree colder with 20mm of rain falling. Another 20mm of rain fell on the 5th, and although a brief interlude of fine weather occurred at the beginning of the second week, it remained cool and changeable until after mid month. Northeast winds then produced some cool and cloudy days, but generally it became warmer and sunnier. On the 31st the highest temperature was near 26°C. 

June - Rather cool with below average rainfall and sunshine.

The first day of the the month was very warm and humid with thunderstorms breaking out. The temperature exceeded 26°C. After a few days of fine and warm weather, it became cooler and changeable at the end of the first week, On the 13th, the afternoon temperature failed to rise above 14°C. and the 15th the high was similar with over 10mm of rain falling. There were a few warm days after mid month, but generally it stayed cool and unsettled.

July - Dull and cool with above average rainfall.

The opening week of July was mostly dull with rain at times. It was mostly cool, and on the 5th there was a fresh northwest wind and a maximum temperature of only 14°C. The second week was brighter with sunny spells but temperatures continued to be below average. After mid month there were further cool and cloudy days, but there was a little more in the way of sunshine and temperatures were generally slightly higher. On the 28th, the maximum was 25°C.

August - Dry and cool with below average sunshine.

The beginning of August was cool and unsettled. On the 2nd, the maximum temperature was only 17°C. with 6mm of rain falling. Winds were mainly from the northwest until the middle of the second week and it was mostly rather cool and showery. Temperatures then rose slightly but it stayed changeable. The third week was fairly sunny, and on both the 20th and 21st the temperature reached 24°C. It became cooler again later in the month but with plenty of dry weather.

September - Dry with above average sunshine and temperatures.

The first week of the month was rather cloudy, but amounts of rain were small and temperatures were not far from average.The 10th was a rather cloudy and humid day but the temperature reached 24°C. Overnight on the 13th/14th over 7mm of rain fell but much of the second and third weeks were dry with sunny periods. It was rather warm at times but often breezy. There was little change until the last few days of the month, when it became very unsettled and cool.

October - Very dry and mild with slightly above average sunshine.

On the 3rd of October over 1mm of rain fell, but it then became mainly dry with sunny periods. There were some ground frosts, and the temperature at dawn on the 4th was close to 1°C. However, by day it became warm at times, and the maximum temperatures on both the 11th and 12th were around 24°C. It became cooler during the third week and another millimetre of rain fell, but then high pressure became established again, with plenty of dry, bright weather.

November - Very dry, mild and sunny.

The temperature reached 17°C. on both  the 1st and 2nd, and although the weather became unsettled for a while, highs of 17°C. occurred on the 5th, 7th and 8th and rainfall was mostly negligible. On the 13th, nearly 6mm of rain fell and after mid month the weather became cloudier and windier, but it remained mild or very mild. A marked change occurred on the 25th, with cold northerly winds developing. There was plenty of sunshine but with highs of only 5 to 7°C.  
  
December - Very wet with slightly below average sunshine and near normal temperatures.

After a cold start with a high of only 3°C., the first week became rather mild but changeable. The 8th was a wet day with nearly 20mm of rain falling and during the second week it became very mild at times. On both the 10th and 11th the maximum temperature was around 14°C. After mid month it became colder for a while. On the 20th and 21st, sleet and snow fell. It then become mild and very unsettled, before very cold and wintery weather arrived at the end of the year.
