1983 Rather dry and mild. A good Summer.
In the year that Margaret Thatcher led the Conservative Party to a second General Election victory over Michael Foot's Labour Party, seat belts became compulsory in cars, and the first edition of Microsoft Word was released. In the world of music, Culture Club with 'Karma Chameleon' was the most successful record of the year spending 6 weeks at the top of the UK charts.
Weather Notes:-
11th February - Snow fell from Dorset to Lincolnshire eastwards with several cms accumulating on high ground. It also snowed at Palma Airport (Majorca).
5th June - Severe thunderstorms along the south coast of England from Devon eastwards. Hail, the size of tennis balls destroyed glasshouses, and at Poole (Dorset) over 60mm of rain fell.
12th July - Unusually hot on the coasts of south and west England,  and Wales. A high of 31°C was reported at Newquay (Cornwall), 32°C. at Hayling Island (Hampshire) and 33°C at Cardiff. At Cromer (Norfolk) it was foggy all day with a high of just 15°C.

The first 3 weeks of January were mostly very mild with daily maximum temperatures generally above 10°C. On the 5th the high was 14°C. It became less mild at the end of the third week, and on the 19th the high was only 6°C with a sharp frost on the following night. It was changeable during the first fortnight but no measurable rain fell from the 16th to the 23rd, before very mild and unsettled weather returned. The maximum temperature on the 27th was 14°C.    

February - Cold and rather sunny with below average rainfall.

It was changeable, often windy, with temperatures only slightly below normal, at first, but at the end of the opening week, winds became northeast, and the second week was cold with snow at times and highs near 3°C. On the 11th, the melted snow amounted to 8mm of rain. From the 14th until the 23rd it was dry with cold east winds, and several frosty nights. The last few days of the month were milder and unsettled, with a high close to 13°C on the 26th.

March - Rather mild, dull and dry.

High pressure dominated the weather during the first half of March, and less than 4mm of rain fell. Weak fronts eroded the anticyclone at times bringing bands of cloud and rather cool weather. However, temperatures were generally above normal, and on the 10th the maximum was near 15°C.  The second half of the month, was more unsettled, but still mild at times with a high close to 15°C. again on the 17th. The last week of March was generally colder.

April - Very wet and rather cold with sunshine close to normal.

Early April was cyclonic,  rather cold and showery. There were several slight frosts. The 11th was wet all day with a high of only 8°C as the unsettled weather continued into the second week. Around mid month it was briefly dry, warm and sunny, and on the 15th the temperature rose close to 19°C. On the 18th, sleet fell, producing 14mm of rain and a high of only 5°C, but although the end of the month stayed very unsettled, it became slightly milder.

May - Dull, wet and rather cool.

A slow-moving trough of low pressure gave a wet day on the 1st and the temperature on the 2nd failed to rise above 11°C. The end of the first week was warmer but it then became cool, breezy and showery. There were some heavy, thundery showers, but during the last week the weather generally improved, temperatures rose,  and on the 25th it was sunny all day but with a cool northerly wind. On the 31st, the temperature rose above 20°C. for the only time during May.

June - Very dry with below normal sunshine and slightly above average temperatures.

Severe thunderstorms occurred very early on the 1st, but it then became fresher, although further storms occurred on the afternoon of the 5th and it then became rather warm. During the second week it was changeable but only light rain fell, and then high pressure brought plenty of fine weather after mid month. Winds were mainly from the northeast until the last few days of the month, and sometimes it was cool and cloudy, otherwise it was mostly rather warm.

July - Very warm and sunny with rainfall slightly above average.

The first week was mainly dry and sunny. Temperatures were near normal on the 1st,, but it then became mostly very warm. On the 6th, late afternoon thunderstorms gave 21mm of rain and it stayed  thundery until the 8th. It was hot during the second week, and on the 15th the maximum temperature was just under 33°C. It became cooler for a while from the 19th, with a rather changeable interlude,  but the end of the month was sunny and hot again.    

August - Very dry, warm and sunny.

After overnight thunderstorms, the 1st was a breezy day of sunshine and light showers, and on the 2nd the temperature failed to rise above 20°C. However, there was no measurable rain from the 3rd until the 22nd and it became sunny and mostly warm or very warm. On the 19th, the temperature reached 30°C. On the night of the 21st/22nd nearly 8mm of rain fell, but no significant rain fell through the rest of the month, and until the last few days it stayed warm.  

September - Rather warm, dull and dry.

The start of the month was unsettled and often windy, although rainfall was light and temperatures were mostly above normal. During the second week, it became cooler, and the maximum temperature on the 11th was only 13°C. The changeable weather lasted until the fourth week, but after a cool and wet day on the 21st, temperatures rose with plenty of sunshine occurring. On the 26th, the afternoon high rose above 24°C, but there was a dull end to the month. 

October - Rather dry with above normal sunshine and near average temperatures.

After a mild but mostly cloudy first 3 days, the 4th was sunny and the temperature almost reached 24°C. It stayed mostly mild until mid month but the weather became increasingly unsetlled and windy. On the 19th, pressuire built  and there was no more measurable rain during the rest of the month. Temperatures were generally above average, but it was cold from the 28th, and after an early minimum below minus 2°C., the high for the day on the 30th was only 9°C. 

November - Mild, dull and rather dry.

The first 10 days of November were mostly dry, bright and very mild. On both the 9th and 10th the maximum temperature was around 17°C. Cold easterly winds then developed and on the 14th, the high was only 7°C. On the following night there was a sharp frost.  It then became slightly milder but skies were often overcast. On the night of the 22nd/23rd the low was minus 7°C. There were 27mm of rain overnight on the 26th/27th during a short mild interlude.

December - Rather mild and sunny with below average rainfall.

There was plenty of sunshine during the first week of December, and although slight frosts occurred, daytime temperatures were above normal. The second week was colder and unsettled, although clear skies gave a morning low near minus 5°C. on the 11th, followed by a high of only 3°C. Unsettled, often windy, and rather mild weather continued until the 21st, then it became very mild with highs between 10 and nearly 14°C. throughout  the remainder of the month.
