2005 Dry and sunny. Warm early Autumn
In the year that Pope John Paul the Second died, Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles and New Labour were voted in by the UK electorate to govern the country for a third term. In the music world, Tony Christie re-released his 1971 hit 'Is this the way to Amarillo' and topped the British charts for 7 weeks.
Weather Notes:-
7th and 8th January - In the 48 hours up to 6 pm on the 8th a total of 184mm of rain fell at Capel Curig (Gwynedd).
26th July - 942mm of rain were reported to have fallen on Mumbai (Bombay) India in just 24 hours.
22nd October - With the formation of Tropical Storm Alpha, the Atlantic 'Hurricane Season' became the most active since records began.
27th October - The temperature rose above 22°C at Kinlochewe (Ross and Cromarty), the latest that such a high maximum had occurred anywhere in the UK.

Winds were mainly between southwest and northwest during January bringing mild Atlantic  air across London. Although frontal systems frequently brought rain, it was mostly light and the wettest day, the 17th, only measured 7mm in total.  Only 2 air frosts occurred, and no snow was reported although a little sleet fell as the winds veered more northerly during the last week.On the 26th, the maximum temperature was only 4.8°C.
February - Cold and dry, with sunshine slightly above average..

The first half of the month was mostly mild and on the 12th the temperature rose to 13.7°C. The following day was much colder with sleet falling in the showers, and thereafter, for the rest of the month, it turned wintery with snow falling on 9 days and lying on 3 mornings. Half the rainfall for the month fell as snow, but the 6mm on the 21st was the wettest day. On the 24th, the maximum temperature was only 2.7°C.
March - Rather wet with sunshine slightly above average and temperatures close to normal.

The first fortnight of March was cold with frequent night frosts. Snow fell daily until the 4th and briefly lay on the morning of the 4th. The temperature on the 2nd only rose to 3.0°C.. At the beginning of the third week a dramatic rise in temperature took place with the maximum on the 19th reaching 21.1°C. but the weather continued fairly unsettled. On the 29th, 17mm of rain fell, the only occasion when 10mm was exceeded.

April - Rather warm and fairly dry and sunny.

A pleasantly warm start to the month, with a maximum of 19.3°C.on the 3rd, was followed by cooler weather, and on the 8th the highest temperature was only 7.9°C. with a little sleet during the morning. There was a slight frost on the following night, 1 of only 2 air frosts experienced during the month. Unsettled weather prevailed, and although rain followed by sun and showers was a recurring theme, daily amounts of rain did not exceed 7mm.

May - Rather cool,  rather dry and with near average sunshine.

The first 2 days of May were quite warm, and on the 1st the maximum temperature was 24°C. Somewhat cooler weather followed, with occasional ground frosts, and it wasn't until the 25th that temperatures rose above 21°C. again. On the 27th there was unbroken sunshine and a maximum of 30°C., but this isolated hot day was followed by a return to average temperatures. On the 30th, 16mm of rain fell.

June - Rather warm,  dry and fairly sunny.

Much of the month had temperatures close to average, although chilly nights occurred during the second week with ground frost  on the morning of the 7th. However, there was a week of very warm weather that began on the 17th, and on the 19th the temperature peaked at 31.4°C. Thunderstorms occurred during this warm spell but amounts of rain were small. On the 29th, though, thunderstorms produced pea-sized hail and 16mm of rain. 

July - Temperatures, rainfall and sunshine all slightly below average

The first 9 days of the month were mostly cool and changeable. It then became mainly dry and warm or very warm until the 23rd with less than 1mm of rain. The temperature on both the 13th and 14th exceeded 29°C.  Over two thirds of the rainfall during July fell during the last week, with nearly 11mm of rain on the 24th. Tthere were some cool days. On the 27th the temperature only reached 15.9°C. 

August - Rather cool, wet but fairly sunny.

There were several warm or very warm days during the month but no sustained spell of warm weather. On the 18th the temperature exceeded 28°C. but the warmest day was the 31st with 31.3°C. The period from the 19th to the 25th was particularly  cool and thundery and accounted for about half the rainfall that fell during August. The total on the 22nd was 14mm, and on the 19th and 24th the maximum temperature was only 17°C.
September - Warm and dry with sunshine a little above average..

Apart from the 11th, when the maximum was only 16.9°C., the first half of the month was warm or very warm,  humid and, at times, thundery. On the 4th the temperature rose to 28.2°C. and there were3 other days with highs over 25°C.  It was then cooler, and mainly dry until the beginning of the fourth week,  after which it turned changeable and occasionally windy. The end of the month was cool with a maximum temperature of 15.1°C. on the 28th.

There was a ground frost on the morning of the 3rd, otherwise both days and nights were generally mild or even warm.  There were 4 days when the temperature exceeded 20°C, the last of these as late as the 27th when the high was 20.8°C.  On the night of the 11th/12th the lowest temperature reading was an exceptionally high 16.9°C. Rainfall exceeded 10mm on 3 days, with over 21mm falling on the 12th.
November - Very sunny, cold and dry.

Mild southwesterlies dominated the weather during the first 11 days, with the temperature on the 2nd reaching 17.4°C.  Most of the November rain, fell during this opening period of the month, and on the 2nd over 13mm of rain was measured,   before winds became mainly northwesterly.  The weather then became dry and colder with frost and fog. A high of 2.9°C occurred on the 25th, but unsettled conditions returned during the last week. 
December - Very sunny, dry and rather cold.

The first week was unsettled with over half the rainfall total for the month occurring during this period, including 14mm on the 1st. . From then until Christmas it was mainly dry with some frost and fog but also several mild days. After Christmas it turned much colder with occasional snow and on the 29th the temperature failed to rise above minus 0.2°C. However,  milder air returned at the end of the month.
