2001 A wet and thundery year.
In the year that terrorism hit the USA with attacks that included the destruction of the 'Twin Towers' in New York, the UK New Labour party won its second successive General Election, and apple started marketing the iPod. In the world of music, Atomic Kitten and Kylie Minogue each spent 4 weeks at number One in the UK charts.
Weather Notes:-
4th February - As much as 60cm of level snow fell in parts of Aberdeenshire.
3rd March - A combination of deep snow cover and clear skies allowed minimum temperatures to fall below minus 21°C. in northern Scotland.
21st October - Over 82 mm of rain fell in Cambridge.

The first week of the year was unsettled but mild or very mild. From the 7th to the 19th it was mostly and it became increasingly cold with night frosts. On both the 18th and 19th the maximum temperature was only 2 °C. A little sleet and snow fell on the 19th,20th and 21st, but then it became mild and unsettled for a while. On the 26th, nearly 12 mm of rain fell, this  turned to sleet to leave a colder end to the month.

February - Very wet, sunny with temperatures close to normal.

The first half of February was mostly mild and unsettled with only 4 days when maximum temperatures were under 10° C. On the 7th, nearly 20 mm of rain fell with almost 16 mm falling on the 12th. No significant rain fell between 13th and 21st and there were several frosty nights. The last week of the  month was changeable with a little sleet or snow and temperatures mainly below normal. Temperatures near normal but a little sleet or snow during the last week.

March - Very wet, dull and cold.

In this very unsettled month there were only 2 completely dry days, the 5th and the 19th. There were thunderstorms on the 12th,16th and 29th and sleet or snow on the first 4 days,  and on the 21st and 22nd. On the 1st the temperature failed to rise above 3 °C, and it was cold for much of the first week and also for a 5-day spell after mid month. There were only 2 night frosts, these both occurring during the first week.

April Rather dull and wet with temperatures slightly below normal.

Only 3 completely dry days occurred during April, but there was only 1 day when rainfall exceeded 10 mm, namely on the 8th when over 12 mm fell. No snow fell during the month, and the generally cloudy and breezy weather helped to prevent air frosts. The temperature only exceeded 14 °C on 5 days during the month, but on only 2 occasions was the maximum temperature below 10°C.

May - Rather sunny with rainfall and temperatures slightly above average.

There were only 6 days during May when  measurable amounts of rain fell, with all of these occurring within the first 17 days. Some heavy rain fell , with thunder heard on 5 occasions. Nearly 14 mm of rain fell on the 2nd, and on the 16th, hail fell in the storms with rainfall totalling nearly 19 mm. The temperature failed to reach 10°C on the 17th, but during May there were 10 days when maxima exceeded 22°C.

June - Dry and rather sunny with temperatures close to average.

Rain fell on 7 out of the first 16 days of June but then no measurable rain occurred.  Daily rainfall only exceeded 6 mm on 1 occasion, with over 15 mm falling on the 16th. During the first 19 days, maximum temperatures remained below 22°C with the high under 14°C on the 10th and below 15°C on the 17th.  From the 19th, maxima reached 21°C on each day, with 25°C  exceeded on 3 days.

July - Rather warm with sunshine slightly above normal and average rainfall.

After 4 dry days at the start of the month, only 1 completely dry day occurred between the 5th and 22nd. No further rain fell during July. There were 3 days when thunder was heard, the 5th,14th and 18th. O{n both the 17th and 18th over 11mm of rain fell. Between the 7th and 22nd the temperature only exceeded 22°C once, otherwise, maxima were above 25°C on every day except the 24th when the high was just under 24°C.

August - Rather wet, with slightly below normal sunshine and near average temperatures.

There were some heavy downpours during August, and thunder was heard on 4 days. On the 9th, almost 17 mm of rain fell, with nearly 13 mm falling on the 18th.  Maximum temperatures were mostly between 20 and 23°C, but values were 25°C, or higher, from the 13th to 15th, and again from the 22nd to 25th. Highs were below 20°C on the last 2 days of the month and a minimum below 8°C occurred on the night of the 28th/29th.

September - Cool and rather dull with near average rainfall.

The temperature rose above 20°C on 3 days during the first week, but the only other occasion when this occurred was on the 28th, the warmest day of the month.  Rain fell at regular intervals during August and there were no occasions during the month when 2 consecutive dry days occurred.  The 29th was the only day with a thunderstorm, and most rain was light. however, 13 mm fell on the 2nd. 

October- Very wet and mild with sunshine slightly below normal.

Unusually, this October was milder than the previous September,  and there were 3 occasions when the temperature exceeded 20°C. There were only 5 occasions when the maximum temperature was not above 16° C, although on the 21st the high was under 12°C. Thunder only occurred once, on the 14th, but  rainfall exceeded 10 mm on 5 days. The wettest day was the 7th when nearly 23 mm of rain fell.

An unsettled month, but with pressure readings much higher than normal, rain was generally light with only 2 daily falls above 5mm and only 1 fall above 10mm, namely the 13mm that fell on the 7th. Sleet fell on the 9th, but generally days were mild, although several frosty nights occurred. On the 23rd, the temperature failed to reach 6°C., but there were 9 days with maxima above 13° C., all these occurring in the first and last weeks. 

December - Very dry, sunny and cold.

There were no air frosts during the first week of December, but during the rest of the month there were only 7 frost-free nights. There were 4 occasions when the temperature rose above 10°C., all of these during the first week. Several cold days occurred, with 8 occasions after the 13th with maxima below 5°C. Sleet or snow fell twice, but amounts were small, and rainfall was mostly light with 3mm only exceeded twice.
