1958 Rather Dull and Wet. A Poor Summer.
In the year that Nikita Khrushchev became leader of the Soviet Union, and parking meters first appeared in the streets of London, football fans everywhere were shocked and saddened by the Munich Air Disaster in which 23 people, including 8 Manchester United footballers, died. In the music world, the UK was absent from the Eurovision Song Contest in the Netherlands, which was won by France, The most popular song of the year was 'Magic Moments' by Perry Como which spent 8 weeks at the top of the UK charts.
Weather Notes:-
27th January - The maximum temperature at Aber (Gwynedd) was 18.3°C.
14th March - The minimum temperature at Logie Coldstone (Aberdeenshire) was minus 22.8°C.
5th September - Severe thunderstorms, especially over West Sussex. Hail destroyed market gardening structures and in Southwater, near Horsham, West Sussex, hailstones measured 7cm across and weighed 140g.

January
Rather mild with below average rainfall and sunshine.

The first 3 weeks of January were mostly changeable and mild. On the 5th, nearly 11mm of rain fell, and on the 6th the temperature rose above 13°C. A marked change in the weather occurred at the end of the third week as it became very cold with snow at times. Around 4cm of snow covered the ground by late on the 21st, and there was further snow at times during the fourth week. On the 22nd, the temperature only reached 1.2°C., but at the end of the month it became milder.

February-  Mild, dull and wet.

There was a short cold spell early in February, and after an overnight frost, the temperature on the 7th only reached 1.0°C. It then became milder, and around mid month it became very mild for a while. Another short-lived cold spell produced some snow on both the 24th and 25th. The mixture of rain, sleet and snow gave a water equivalent of nearly 15mm on the 24th. The 26th was a day of unbroken sunshine, and the end of the month was less cold.

March - Cold and rather dry with above average sunshine.

Winds were frequently from the north during March bringing a mixture of sunshine and wintry showers. Sleet or snow fell on 9 days during the month, and on the 10th the maximum temperature was only 1.6°C. There were many dry and fairly sunny days followed by frosty nights, and precipitation during the month was mostly light. However, during the last week the weather became somewhat milder and unsettled, and on the 28th, over 5mm of rain was recorded.  

April Rather cold and dry with near average sunshine.

The opening week of the month was cold, and overnight on the 2nd/3rd there was a slight frost with the  temperature only rising to 5.9°C. during the day. After morning sunshine on the 4th, it became cloudy and wet with rain turning to sleet and wet snow at times. Almost 26mm of rain was measured on the 5th, but the weather then became drier, brighter,  and during the last week, warmer. On the last day of the month the afternoon temperature rose above 22°C.

May Rather wet with near normal temperatures and sunshine.

The first half of May was generally warm by day with sunny periods. On the 2nd, the maximum temperature was above 24°C. Some cool nights occurred, especially during the first week. Although a few sunny days occurred, the second half of the month was cloudier, cooler and sometines wet. On the 16th, the temperature failed to rise above 11.6°C. The wettest weather occurred during the last week, and on the 29th, nearly 21mm of rain was recorded.

June - Very wet, dull and rather cool.

There were several cloudy, cool and wet days during this unsettled month. On the 2nd, over 22mm of rain was measured. At the end of the second week the weather became mainly dry for a while with sunny periods. It became warmer, and on the 16th the afternoon temperature reached 25°C. However, the changeable conditions returned, and during the last week of June it became unseasonably cool at times. On the 27th the temperature only reached 12.8°C.

July Above average sunshine, below normal temperatures and near average rainfall.

The first few days of July were often rather cool, and on the 5th the temperature only reached 17.3°C. At the end of the first week it became warm and sunny, and on the 8th the temperature almost reached 27°C. The warm spell ended abruptly during the middle of the second week, and the 13th was very windy with a gust of 49kn recorded. The rest of the month was fairly changeable, and some heavy rain occurred at times. On the 16th, nearly 25mm of rain fell.

AugustVery dull and wet with below average temperatures.

Although the 2nd was a mostly sunny day, generally the month was cloudy and sometimes wet. The cloud cover helped to keep night temperatures above average, but days were mostly rather cool. On the 5th, the maximum temperature only reached 17.6°C. Warm days were scarce, but after an overnight low near 17°C', the temperature during the day exceeded 27°C. another warm day occurred on the 21st, but unsettled weather produced over 18mm of rain on the 25th.

September - Very wet and rather warm with slightly above average sunshine.

The opening week of September was warm, humid and thundery. On the 3rd, nearly 19mm of rain fell, and on the 5th, after an overnight low close to 17°C., the temperature during the day rose above 24°C. The weather became fresher during the second week, but there were several more warm days with spells of sunshine, these lasting into the final week of September. A cooler end to the month gave a maximum temperature of only 16.3°C. on the 26th.

October Rather mild with below average rainfall and sunshine.

Winds were mainly between south and west during October maintaining generally mild, and frequently cloudy, weather. There were many dry days, and rainfall was generally light, but on the 13th nearly 15mm of rain was recorded. Several mild days occurred during the month, and on the 14th, the maximum rose above 17°C. During the last week of this frost-free October it became somewhat colder, and on the 28th the maximum temperature only reached 11.1°C.

After a sunny day on the 1st, the opening week of became unsettled and very mild. On the 2nd, nearly 25mm of rain was measured, and the temperature on the 3rd rose above 14°C. Towards mid month the weather became less changeable, but days were often rather cloudy and misty. On the night of the 14th/15th there was a slight frost and there were some rather cold days. On the 25th the temperature only reached 6.1°C., but nights stayed mostly mild.

December Dull, wet and rather mild.

The first day of December was sunny, and there were further spells of sunshine during the first week. However, it was dull and misty at times, and on the 4th, the maximum temperature failed to rise above 4.4°C. A slight frost occurred early on the morning of the  6th, but the weather then became mainly unsettled and mild. On the 13th, nearly 14mm of rain fell. It continued to be mild around Christmas, and on the 28th the temperature rose close to 13°C.
