1901 Cold, Dry and Fairly Sunny. A Dry Summer and Autumn.
In the year that Queen Victoria died after reigning for nearly 64 years, the first ever Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Swiss businessman Henri Dunant, and the 25th American President, William McKinley, was assassinated.
Weather Notes:-
12th July - 92mm of rain fell at Maidenhead (Berkshire)
13th November - Severe northeasterly gale and heavy rain led to the loss of the Caister (Norfolk) lifeboat with the death of all 9 crewmen.
13th December - Heavy snow in Haworth (West Yorkshire) with drifts over 2m deep.

January - Dry with below average sunshine and slightly below normal temperatures.

The beginning of January was mostly cold with some sleet and snow falling. On the 7th, the maximum temperature only reached minus 0.9°C.  and the equivalent of nearly 7mm of rain fell on the 8th. Clear skies and a fresh snow cover helped to lower the temperature below minus 7°C. on the following night. During the second week, it became less cold, and towards the end of the month it became very mild. On the 27th, the maximum temperature rose above 12°C.

February - Dull, cold and dry.

Most of the month was dry, rather cloudy and fairly cold. However, there were some sunny days with sharp overnight frosts during the second week. On the night of the 13th/14th the minimum temperature fell close to minus 6°C., and on the following day the maximum was only 1.1°C. The wettest and mildest weather occurred at the end of February. On the 27th nearly 7mm of rain fell, and on the following day the temperature rose above 10°C.


March - Dull, cold and rather wet.

There was some mild weather early in the month, and on the 5th the afternoon temperature rose close to 13°C. However, most of March was unsettled with cold days, some sleet and snow, but with cloud and a fresh breeze often preventing night-time temperatures from falling below freezing. On the 20th, over 9mm of rain fell, but during the last week there were sunny spells, cold days and frosty nights. On the 27th the maximum temperature was only 3.2°C.

April - Sunny and rather wet with temperatures close to average.

The first week of April was cold and changeable. On the 2nd there was a slight frost, and on the 3rd over 10mm of rain fell. The maximum temperature was only 8.3°C. on the 5th, but at the end of the week it became milder. Temperatures slowly rose through the second and third weeks, and it became warm and sunny for a while. On the 23rd, the temperature almost reached 23°C, but it then became cooler, and a slight frost occurred on the night of the 28th/29th.

May - Very dry and rather sunny with temperatures slightly below average.

The opening 10 days of May were unsettled and mostly cool. There was a ground frost on the morning of the 1st, and on the 8th the maximum temperature was only 11.5°C. Nearly 7mm of rain fell on the 9th, but then no further measurable fell from the 11th until the 25th. There were some cool nights but pleasantly warm days. During the last week it became unsettled, but it was very warm at times, with the afternoon temperature rising close to 27°C. on the 29th. 

June - Rather cool and dry with above average sunshine.

There was plenty of dry, sunny and fairly warm weather during the early part of the month, and on the 9th the maximum temperature was close to 26°C. There was some rain, but amounts were small. although a dull, damp day on the 13th resulted in a temperature no higher than 13.7°C. The dryness of the ground helped to produce some chilly nights during the third and fourth weeks. However, 20mm of rain falling on the 30th helped to reduce the water shortage.
 
July - Warm with below normal rainfall and above average sunshine.

The first week was changeable with temperatures not far from normal. A warm spell developed during the second week, and this lasted until the fourth week apart from a rather cool day on the 14th. No measurable rain fell from the 7th until the 23rd, and on the 19th the temperature almost reached 31°C. The last week of the month was rather cool and unsettled. On the 25th, over 21mm of rain fell, and on the following day the maximum temperature was only 17.3°C.

August - Rather sunny with below normal rainfall and near average temperatures.

Much of August was dry with long sunny periods and it was often pleasantly warm by day, although nights were sometimes cool.. On the 25th the temperature rose close to 28°C., one of several days when the maximum temperature exceeded 25°C. Some rain fell during the month, but it was mainly light until the last few days of August. On the 27th, nearly 13mm of rain was recorded and on the following day the highest temperature was only 16.2°C.

September - Rather dry and dull with temperatures close to average.

The first week of September was mainly dry, fairly sunny and rather warm. On the 8th the maximum temperature almost reached 24°C. During the second week it became cooler and unsettled. The high was only 15.9°C. on the 11th, and on the 16th over 10mm of rain was measured. The latter part of the month became more settled again with lengthy spells of sunshine. Temperatures near, or rather below, normal at first, rose into the rather warm category.

October - Rather cold with below average rainfall and sunshine.

The first few days of October were warm, with the temperature rising above 22°C. on the 1st. On the 4th, nearly 13mm of rain fell, and it then became cooler but with sunny periods. During the second week it became rather cloudy and mostly dry , and this weather, with near normal temperatures,  persisted until the last week. However, during the last few days of the month it became generally colder, and after a high of 6.7°C on the 26th, the following night was frosty. 

November - Very dry, dull and cold.

There was persistent fog from the 2nd to the 7th and the fog was dense enough at times to cause much dislocation of transport. It was rather cold too, but during the second week it became milder with the maximum temperature rising above 12°C. on the 11th. Rain on the 14th was followed by very cold weather and on the 16th the temperature only rose to minus 0.2°C in freezing fog. The latter part of the month was more unsettled but with several frosty nights.


December - Wet, rather cold but fairly sunny.

Unsettled weather prevailed for much of the month, with temperatures varying from mild to rather cold. On the 7th, the maximum temperature was almost 13°C. On the 12th, nearly 21mm of rain fell, but towards the end of the second week a spell of colder, more settled weather developed. On the 17th, the minimum temperature was close to minus 5°C. and the high on the 21st was just  1.4°C. Around Christmas it turned milder and changeable again.
