Celebrating 25 years of Morden weather observations
Warm days, cold days; wet days, dry days. Here are the best and worst days, on average, over the years.
Warmest days

3rd place ...  July 29th  Average maximum 24.5 Celsius

The first July in Morden (1988) was cool and changeable, and the temperature on the 29th only reached 18.9 Celsius. Each of the next 4 years were warm with highs above 25 Celsius, and included 27.7 Celsius in 1991. In 1993 it was fairly cool, but in 1994 it was pleasantly warm, and in 1995 a maximum of 30.2 Celsius was recorded. It was rather cool again in 1998 but 30.6 Celsius was logged in 2001. However this value was bettered in the following year when 32.0 Celsius was noted. Thereafter, only 2002 and 2004 were warm on the 29th with the rest of the years having maxima rather below normal

2nd place ...August 8th Average maximum 24.5 Celsius

Only 2 hundredths of a dgree warmer than the third placed July date but it was off to a good start in 1988 with 26.3 Celsius being recorded. In the following few years it was warm, although there was a fresh feel to the day in 1993, and plenty of sunshine failed to lift the temperature above 22 Celsius. In 1995 the 8th was disappointingly cloudy and cool at just 21.3 Celsius in an otherwise warm and sunny month. In 1997 a high of 30.9 Celsius was recorded with 29.9 Celsius logged in the following year. There was nothing remarkable about the following 4 years, but the exceptionally hot start to August 2003 saw a maximum of 31.1 Celsius measured on the 8th. The following year had 30.1 Celsius as a maximum, but after several average years, there was a high of only 18.9 Celsius in the chilly August of 2008. In the remaining years, temperatures on the 8th were not far from average.

!st place ... 6th August Average maximum 24.6 Celsius

In 1988 it was a poor summer, but there were a few warm days, and the second warmest day of the year occurred on the 6th with a high of 27.9 Celsius. In the following year it was 0.1 warmer at 28.0 Celsius. In 1990, record-breaking heat on the 3rd had moved well away by the 6th, and the high on that day was 15 Celsius lower than the sweltering 35.5 Celsius measured on the 3rd.  Highs in the low 20s Celsius in 1991,1992 and 1993 were followed by 26.0 Celsius in both 1994 and 1995. Several years followed with highs in the low to mid 20s Celsius, but in 2003, another record-breaking month in which the English record high was broken at Faversham (Kent) with 38.5 Celsius, Morden also had a heatwave. On the 10th a high of 36.7 Celsius was recorded but the 6th wasn't far behind with 34.9 Celsius, the third highest value recorded in Morden in any month. After a maximum above 27 Celsius in 2004, afternoon sunshine failed to lift the temperature above 19.5 Celsius in 2005. Since 2010 August 6th has been cooler than average with maxima around 20 Celsius, although there was a slight improvement in 2013 with a high of 23.3 Celsius.

Coldest days

3rd place ... December 29th Average maximum 7.20 Celsius

Although there is a secondary dip in temperature at the end of January and the beginning of February, on average the lowest values roughly coincide with the shortest days. At any time during the winter months  a very mild day is possible, whereas a very cold day is much less likely. In 1988, the 29th was mild, less so in the following year, but mild again in the following 2 years. In 1992 it was one of those rare cloudless days but the temperature failed to rise above 4.0 Celsius. The maxi mum was in double figures in 1993 and 1994, but in another day with sunshine from dawn to dusk, the temperature only rose to 3.5 Celsius in 1995. Light snow fell at times in 1996 and the high for the day was 2.2 Celsius. There were then 3 more mild years, but yet another completely sunny day in 2000 was accompanied by a maximum of just 1.8 Celsius, the coldest day of the month. The 29th was the second coldest day of the month in 2001, and after early sleet the temperature staggered up to 3.0 Celsius.   By way of contrast,, in 2002 the 29th was the second mildest day of the month with 13.2 Celsius. Frost days, when the temperature stays below freezing all day, are uncommon occurrences, but in 2005, under overcast skies, the tempedrature only reached minus 0.2 Celsius. Both 2008 and 2009 were quite cold, but in 2010, the 29th was the mildest day of the month with a high of 9.3 Celsius in what was to be the coldest December for at least 100 years. In the 3 years that followed, the 29th continued to be mild..

2nd place ... December 21st Average maximum 7.18 Celsius

The shortest day of the year has coincided with some of the lowest day-time temperatures in Morden overall, although there were also several mild days.  The temperature reached double figures on the 21st in 1988, and in 1989 it was the mildest day of the month with a high of 13.8 Celsius. The year 1992 was the the first time December 21st failed to reach double figures, but the high of 5.8 Celsius was not especially low. In 1993 there was sleet early in the day, although the temperature struggled up to 4.8 Celsius. Sleet and snow fell early in the day during 1995, and the maximum was 3.9 Celsius.  The high was only 3.8 Celsius in 1996, but over the following few years temperatures were unremarkable, although no maxima reached double figures. It was a fairly mild December in 2004, but the 21st was the second coldest day of the month with a high of  3.9 Celsius. In 2006. lingering fog was responsible for a maximum of only 1.2 Celsius on the 21st, the coldest day of the month. There were patches of snow on the ground in 2009 with the temperature not rising above 2.8 Celsius.  However, in the bitterly cold December of 2010 there were 6 centimetres of snow on the ground on the 21st and the temperature only reached 1.9  Celsius. By way of contrast, the 21st was one of the m ildest days of the month in 2011 with a high of 12.3 Celsius. Maxima were also in double figures during the following 2 years.

1st place ... December 20th Average maximum 7.1 Celsius

In December 1988 the weather was unusually dry but it was also mild. On the 20th a maximum temperature of 8.0 Celsius occurred, but the first  week of  the month was the only time when lower maxima occurred. The 20th was very mild in 1989, and the high of 13.7 Celsius was the second highest of the month. Temperatures were not especially low for several years in the 1990s, and in 1995, even with sleet falling early in the day, the temperature rose to 5.2 Celsius. In 1999, the coldest night of the month was the 19th/20th with a low of minus 5.8 Celsius. there were a few patches of snow on the ground and the temperature during the day only reached 2.8 Celsius. The next cold 20th was not until 2006 when a spell of  mist and fog was accompanied by a high of 1.5 Celsius. In 2008, the 20th was the mildest day of the month with a high of 13.3 Celsius,  but in the following year large patches of snow on the ground pegged the temperature back to 2.8 Celsius. In 2010, the night of the 19th/20th was the coldewst on record with a low of minus 9.4 Celsius. A covering of snow 9 centimetres deep helped  to produce the low temperature, and later in the day further snow fell. However, some late morning sunshine occurred, and the temperature briefly rose to 1.4 Celsius. The last 3 years were mild.

Wettest days

3rd place ... October 1st Average rRainfall 4.6 millimetres

In 1988 , there was not a drop of rain on the 1st ; in  fact there was very little cloud and sunshine was almost unbroken. The first measurable rain was not until 1993 when 39.3 millimetres was recorded. Both 1994 and 1998 had a mere 0.2 millimetres, otherwise the mid 90s were dry. In 1999 there were 7.1 millimetres and almost 6 millimetres fell in 2000. It was wetter in 2001 with close on 17 millimetres falling on the 1st. Each of the following 4 years had small amounts of rain, but in 2006  the month started with heavy showers, some of which were accompanied by hail and thunder. as a result, over 19 millimetres were collected on the day. Rain fell in 2007, and over 8 millimetres fell in 2010. It was dry in 2011, but further rain fell in both 2012 and 2013.

2nd place ... September 15th Average rRainfall 4.8 millimetres

It was a dry day on the 15th September 1988, but a little rain fell in the following year, and in 1991 and 1993. In 1994 the 15th was both the coolest and wettest day of the month. It rained all day with a high of 11.6 Celsius and with over 13 millimetres of rain falling. There was an early afternoon thunderstorm in 1995, although less than 5 millimetres of rain were recorded. After 2 dry years, a little rain fell in 1998 with further rain in 1999. However, in 2000 intense thunderstorms produced nearly 59millimetres of rain on the 15th, and this remains the wettest day of any month in Morden. There followed 4 dry years, but in 2005 over 10  millimetres of rain fell. There were then 3 dry years, but in 2009 nearly 13 millimetres of rain fell on the 15th, and this represented  more than 50% of the monthly rainfall. There was further rain, but not very much, in both 2011 and 2013.

1st place ... June 5th Average rainfall 4.9 millimetres

The 5th of June was the wettest day of the month in 1989 with over 10 millimetres of rain falling, and rain, heavy at times, fell on each of the following 3 years. It was dry in 1993, and again in both 1995 and 1996., In 1999 it was wet and the second coolest day of the month, but it was dry in both 2000 and 2001. The 5th of June 2002 was a record-breaking wet June day. Although no thunder occurred, torrential rain, with over 5 millimetres in 5 minutes at one stage, gave a total for the day of  42 millimetres. It was also the coolest day of the month with a high of 13.5 Celsius. The next significant rain was not until 2009 when nearly 5 millimetres fell. Further rain fell in 2010, but in 2011 the rain was heavy with almost 29 millimetres falling overnight, making it the wettest day of the month. More rain fell in 2012 but no rain was measured in either 2013 or 2014.

Driest days

3rd place ... August 30th Average rainfall 0.34 millimetres

In 1988 the 30th of August stayed dry all day, but cloud increased during the afternoon and the rain that fell in the early hours of the 31st was attributed to the 30th. A little rain fell in 1989, but less than 1 millimetre was measured and in both 1990 and 1991 it was dry. Less than 2 millimetres of rain fell in 1992, but after a dry year in 1993, less than 1 millimetre was recorded in 1994. The pattern continued into the latter part of the 1990s but there were then 3 consecutive dry years beginning in 1998. The minimum amount of measurable rain (0.2 millimetres). fell in 2001 but the 30th August then stayed dry until 2008. Once again, the rain  fell overnight; in fact there was a thunderstorm just before the rain was measured on the morning of the 31st. Apart from 0.3 millimetres in 2012, there was no more measurable rain.

2nd place ... May 22nd Average rainfall 0.32 millimetres

The 29th February had less average rainfall (0.29 millimetres) but as readings only occurred once every 4 years they were not included.

In the whole of May 1989 there were only 1.5 millimetres of rain and it only fell on 2 days. However, on the 22nd, there was a thunderstorm in the early hours, but with no measurable rain. In May 1990 it was also very dry with rain only falling twice. This year, though, the 22nd was fine and almost cloudless. The first measurable rain occurred in 1994, but only 0.2 millimetres troubled the raingauge. In 1996, May was unsettled after mid month, and almost 5 millimetres of rain fell on the 22nd. There was no more rain until 2006, but in that year it was changeable again after mid month. However, there were only just over 2 millimetres on the 22nd. The next rain was in 2011 but less than 1 millimetre fell. The last significant rain occurred in 2014 when hail and thunder accompanied the 5 millimetres that fell.

1st place ... July 25th Average rainfall 0.24 millimetres

There was some rain and drizzle in the morning on the 25th of July 1988 but there was not sufficient to measure. In the very warm July of 1989 the temperature almosat reached 30 Celsius on the 25th, but no rain fell. There was no measurable rain between the 7th and 27th of July in 1990, and both 1991 and 1992 were also dry. In the changeable 1993 July there was a total of 0.5 millimetres on the 25th, Remarkably, the next rain that fell on the 25th of July was not until 2003. On that day nearly 3 millimetres of rain fell.  A similar amount of rain fell in 2005.Small amounts of rain, less than 1 millimetre, fell in 2006 and 2007, but 2008 was dry. The following few years were dry, but in 2013, after a prolonged dry spell, there was some rain on the 25th.
