Weather in South London during March 2015
A slow start to Spring in a cloudy, but rather dry, month.

The average maximum temperature during March 2015 was 11.6 Celsius (53F), and that was 0.2 Celsius (0.4F) below normal. The average minimum temperature was 4.0 Celsius (39F), and that was 0.2 Celsius (0.4F) below the monthly normal.  

The highest temperature recorded during March was 16.1 Celsius (61F) on the 7th, and there were only 2 other days when maxima exceeded 14 Celsius (57F), the 12th with 14.6 Celsius (59F), and the 28th with 14.1 Celsius (57F). On most days, the temperature reached at least 10 Celsius (50F), but on 9 days maxima were under 10 Celsius (50F). However, the only day when the temperature failed to reach 8 Celsius (46F) was the 15th when the high was just 6.5 Celsius (44F).

There were no particularly mild nights during March, in fact there were only 2 nights with minimum temperatures above 7 Celsius (45F). On the 28th/29th a minimum of 9.1 Celsius (48F) was recorded, but the mildest night was the last night of the month when a low of 9.9 Celsius (50F) occurred. On most nights, temperatures fell to between 3 and 7 Celsius (37-45F), but on 10 nights minima were below 3 Celsius (37F). On 6 of these colder nights temperatures dipped to between 2 and 3 Celsius (36-37F), but on 3 of the other cold nights minima were below 0 Celsius (32F). The coldest night was the 4th/5th with a low of minus 1.5 Celsius (30F).  This was the highest value for a March monthly minimum since 2000.   


There were 3 air frosts during March, and that's 1 below the average. All the air frosts were slight, with the first occurring on the night of the 4th/5th, and the other 2 occurring on the 22nd/23rd and the 24th/25th,  with minima of minus 1.0 Celsius (30F) and minus 0.8 Celsius (31F) respectively. There were 13 grass frosts, and that's average for the month. They were fairly evenly divided with 6 occurring before mid month and the other 7 occurring after the 16th. The grass frosts were mostly slight with just 4 grass minima below minus 2 Celsius (28F), and with only 1 of these having a reading below minus 5 Celsius (23F). The lowest grass temperature was minus 5.8 Celsius (21F) measured on the night of the 22nd/23rd.    


A total of 26.0 millimetres (1 in.) of rain fell during March,  and this was around 30% below the long-term average. There were 13 days with significant*  rain and this was average, and there were 9 wet** days during March and that was 1 day above average for the month. The first 3 weeks of March were largely dry with only 6.6 millimetres (0.3 ins) of rain falling between the 1st and 22nd. Only 5 days of measurable rain were recorded during this period, with the heaviest  fall, 3.3 millimetres (0.1 ins), measured on the first day of the month. Between the 23rd and the end of the month there was only 1 dry day, the 27th. However, much of the precipitation was light with only 2 days having readings in excess of 4 millimetres (0.16 ins). On the 29th over 4 millimetres were recorded, but the wettest day of the month was the 25th when 4.4 millimetres (0.16 ins) was noted.

*Significant rain is defined as one that has 0.2mm or more. ** A wet day is defined as one that has 1mm, or more, of rain 


There was a short-lived thunderstorm early on the evening of the 1st.     


Soft hail, moderate at times, was  observed in showers on the afternoon and early evening of the 24th, and a light soft hail shower occurred early on the afternoon of the 25th.


There was no sleet or snow observed in Morden during March.


The wind was predominantly from the southwest during March, although for much of the second and third weeks there were winds from between southeast and northeast. The windiest weather generally occurred during the first and last weeks of the month. Between the 4th and 25th there was only 1 day, the 21st, when gusts exceeded 20 knots (23mph). However, at either end of the month there were a further 9 gusty days. On the 1st, 2nd and 28th there were gusts of 30 knots (34 mph), and on the 29th a gust of 35 knots (40 mph) occurred, but the highest gust of the month was 40 knots (46 mph) recorded on the afternoon of the 31st.


There was no fog observed in this part of Morden during March.
