Weather in South London during August 2015
A wet month with some heavy downpours; also rather cool.

The average maximum temperature during August 2015 was 21.6 Celsius (71F), and that was 1.3 Celsius (2F) below normal. The average minimum temperature was 13.4 Celsius (56F), and that was 0.1 Celsius (0.2F) above the monthly normal. It was the first time this year that the average minimum temperature has been above normal.  

The highest temperature recorded in August was 29.9 Celsius (86F) on the 22nd. There were only 5 other days when the temperature exceeded 25 Celsius (77F) with all bar one of these warmer days occurring before the 10th. The second warmest day of the month was the 8th with a high of 26.2 Celsius (79F). There were no cool days before mid month, but during the last fortnight of August there were 7 days when the temperature failed to reach 20 Celsius (68F). On the 24th a high of 17.6 Celsius (64F) was recorded, but this was only the second coolest day of the month. On the 31st, the temperature only reached 15.4 Celsius (60F) and this was the coolest August day since records began in 1988.

There were no exceptionally warm nights during August, but on 8 nights the temperature stayed above 15 Celsius (59F), and on 3 of these warmer nights minima were above 17 Celsius (63F). The warmest night was the 20th/21st with a low of 17.9 Celsius (64F). There were 4 cool nights during August, when the temperature dipped below 10 Celsius (50F). On the 15th/16th a minimum of 9.1 Celsius (48F) occurred, and on the 27th/28th a low of 8.6 Celsius (48F) was recorded. However, the first 2 nights of the month were also cool, and the lowest temperature of 7.5 Celsius (45F) was logged on the very first morning of August.   


There were no air frosts during August and no grass frosts occurred. The lowest grass temperatures were 3.5 Celsius (38F) on the night of the 27th/28th.    


A total of 100.3 millimetres (3.9 in.) of rain fell during August,  and this was nearly 80% above the long-term average. It was the wettest August since 2004, but there have only been 2 wetter Augusts in the area during the last 70 years. There were 14 days with significant*  rain and this was 2 above average, and there were 12 wet** days during August and that was 4 days above average for the month. The beginning of the month was dry with 0.2 millimetres (0.01 ins) the only significant rain during the first 9 days. A spell of unsettled weather included nearly 10 millimetres (0.4 ins) of rain on the 13th, but the only measurable rain between the 15th and 22nd was the 9 millimetres (0.35 ins) that fell on the 19th. The first 22 days of August  yielded a mere 25 millimetres (1 inch) of rain,  but the last 9 days of August were very wet indeed. On the 23rd, nearly 11 millimetres (0.4 ins) of rain fell, with 26.7 millimetres (1 inch) measured on the following day. Rainfall for the 5 days between the 23rd and 27th totalled 54.5 millimetres (2.1 ins). After a dry day on the 28th, the end of the month was unsettled with 18 millimetres (0.8 ins) of rain falling on a thoroughly miserable Bank Holiday Monday.

*Significant rain is defined as one that has 0.2mm or more. ** A wet day is defined as one that has 1mm, or more, of rain 


There were 3 days of thunder during August. The edge of storms to the east and southeast affected Morden mid evening on the 5th, with a couple of rumbles of thunder occurring in association with heavy rain around lunchtime on the 13th. The other day with thunder was the very wet 24th when 3 claps of thunder occurred between early and mid afternoon.      


No hail was observed in Morden during August. 


No sleet or snow was observed in Morden during August.


Southwesterly winds were very much in evidence again during August and accounted for around 50% of the daily observations. Most of the rest comprised of winds from a west or northwesterly direction with winds having an easterly component onluy noticeable on 4 days.  It was breezy early in the month and again during the last week, but gusts only exceeded 20 knots (23 mph) on 4 days. The highest gust was 27 knots (31 mph) on the 26th.


No fog was observed in the Morden area during August.
