1914 Rather Wet, but a Very Wet March and December
In the year that the ship Empress of Ireland, en route from Quebec to Liverpool, sunk in the Gulf of St Lawrence with the loss of over 1000 lives, the Panama Canal was opened, and the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Duchess Sophie were assassinated in Sarajevo and precipitated the Great War.
Weather Notes:-
25th January - 82mm of rain fell at Fort William (Highland).
25th May - Minimum temperature was minus 7°C. at Braemar (Aberdeenshire).
14th June - Severe thunderstorms in London with 94 mm of rain falling in 3 hours at Richmond Park.

The early part of the month was mild and changeable. On the 9th the temperature almost reached 13°C. and on the 10th over 4mm of rain fell. The second week  became fairly settled but colder, and this cold, dull, but mainly dry, weather then persisted until the last week of January. On the night of the 22nd/23rd the temperature fell to minus 7°C. During the day on the 23rd the maximum was only minus 0.2°C., before falling to minus 7°C again on the following night. 
February - Very mild, wet but sunny.

Fresh or strong southwest winds blew for much of the month bringing bands of rain, alternating with sunny spells. Rain seldom lasted for long and amounts were mostly fairly small, but on the 8th over 11mm was recorded  It was mild or very mild, and the afternoon temperature on the 14th amost reached 14°C. The last week of the month was colder with some wintry showers and overnight frosts. The maximum temperature on the 25th was only 5.0°C.

March - Very wet and dull with temperatures slightly above average.

The first 3 weeks of March were very unsettled with spells of rain or showers, some of these turning wintry. There were only limited amounts of sunshine.  Over 25mm of rain were recorded on the 9th, and on the 20th the temperature only reached 4.1°C. The last 10 days of the month were sunnier with some frosty nights, and although rather cold at first, it became warmer. On the 31st, the temperature nearly reached 17°C,  with almost unbroken sunshine. 

April - Sunny, dry and mild.

The first week of April was unsettled and also rather cool. Over 8mm of rain fell on the 5th, and on the 7th the maximum temperature was only 10.3°C. During the second week it became milder, and through the rest of the month there was plenty of dry and sunny weather with just short wet interludes. There were days of almost unbroken sunshine towards the end of the third week, and the temperature on the 21st exceeded 22°C', but there were some chilly nights.

May - Rather cool. with slightly below average rainfall and near normal sunshine.

The first part of the month was cool, rather cloudy and unsettled. On the 7th, over 21mm of rain was recorded,  and on the 9th the maximum temperature was only 9.2°C.  After mid  month the weather improved with plenty of dry and sunny weather. On the 18th it was sunny throughout the day, and it became warm for a while. The afternoon temperature on the 22nd rose above 26°C., but during the last week it became cooler with some clear and chilly nights.

June - Sunny and rather wet with temperatures close to normal.

Cool and unsettled weather alternated with dry, warm and sunny conditions during June. On the 8th the maximum temperature was only 13.4°C., and a severe thunderstorm, with hail, produced over 33mm of rain on the 14th. There were many dry and fairly sunny days during the second half of June, and during the last few days of the month it became increasingly warm, and eventually hot. On the 30th, it was sunny all day and the afternoon temperature reached 29°C.

July - Dull and rather dry with temperatures near normal

The opening day of July was hot with an afternoon high close to 32°C. After a warm and humid night, the following day was much cooler,  and on the 3rd nearly 11mm of rain fell. A day of sunshine on the 4th began a short spell of mainly dry, sunny and warm weather that lasted through much of the second week. It then became cooler, cloudier and changeable. It was breezy at times during the last week, and the afternoon temperature on the 29th only reached 16.8°C.
August - Rather dry with below normal sunshine and slightly above average temperatures.

It was fairly cool and unsettled at first during August. On the 5th nearly 24mm of rain fell and the maximum temperature on the 8th was only 18.5°C. There were only 9 days during August with measurable rain, and although it was cloudy at times, there were several rather warm days. Some sunny days occurred, particularly during the second week, and occasionally it was very warm. The maximum temperature on the 24th almost reached 27°C.
September - Very sunny and dry with temperatures slightly below average

There were plenty of dry, sunny and warm days early in the month, and on the 7th the maximum temperature was just under 27°C.  A brief unsettled spell occurred during the second week, and on the 11th over 8mm of rain was recorded. The 20th was a damp and cool day, and the highest temperature was only and 13.3°C. No measurable rain fell after the 20th, and although it was rather cool at first with grass frosts, the end of the month became warmer. 

October - Dull and dry with temperatures slightly above average.

The first day of October was dry with almost unbroken sunshine and a maximum temperature above 18°C. Dry weather persisted until the 12th, and although day-time temperatures were above normal, nights were often cool with a few grass frosts. It became changeable at the end of the second week, and  this unsettled weather persisted until the end of the month. Over 6mm of rain fell on the 25th, and it became cooler. The temperature on the 28th only reached 11.5°C.  
November - Sunny and rather wet with temperatures slightly above normal.

The first half of November was generally mild and changeable, but several sunny days occurred. On the 5th the maximum temperature almost reached 16°C. A more settled spell, with some overnight frost, set in around mid month, and at the end of the third week it became cold for a while.  The highest temperatures on the 20th, 21st and 23rd were only 4.1°C. At the end of the month it became milder but wet. On the 29th, nearly 19mm of rain was recorded.
December - Very wet with above average temperatures and near normal sunshine.

In this extremely wet month there were only 6 days without measurable rain. There was a little sleet and snow, but changeable weather ensured that the temperature did not stay low for long. On the 2nd the high was almost 13°C., and on the following day it was sunny. However, rain was never far away. On the 10th nearly 26mm was recorded. A short drier and colder interlude occurred at Christmas, and after an early frost, the highest temperature on the 25th was only 1.9°C.
