1915 Cool and Wet.
In the year of the worst rail crash in British history, when over 200 people died in a multiple collision at Quintinshill (Scotland), more than 1,000 people died when the Luxury Liner Lusitania was torpedoed by German U-boats, and Australian and New Zealand troops landed on the Turkish coast at Gallipoli, eventually resulting in almost 500,000 casualties,
Weather Notes:-
22nd January - 20-30cm of wet snow lay on hilly parts of south London and north Surrey.
6th May - 79mm of rain fell at Finsbury (north London).
4th July - Severe thunderstorms affected southwest and central southern England. Trees were uprooted and glasshouses were destroyed by golfball-sized hail.

The first 3 weeks of the year were unsettled. Some heavy rain fell and it was frequently windy. However, it was mostly mild, and on the 13th the maximum temperature almost reached 12°C. On the 22nd, the weather became much colder and some heavy wet snow fell. The rainfall total, much of it consisting of melted snow, amounted to nearly 30mm. The remainder of the month was rather cold with plenty of dry weather. On the 28th, the temperature only rose to 2.8°C.

February - Very wet, rather mild with above average sunshine.

Winds were mainly from a westerly direction during February bringing a succession  of  active weather systems across the country from the Atlantic. Rather mild and wet days alternated with cooler, brighter days with spells of sunshine. Slight overnight frosts occurred within the transient ridges. On the 17th, over 13mm of rain was recorded, and after a sunny day on the 23rd, leaden skies ahead of the next depression gave a top temperature of only 3.6°C on the 24th.

March - Dry, cold and dull

The opening days of the month were unsettled, and on the 3rd over 6mm of rain fell. However, the weather then became more anticyclonic, although often with plenty of cloud. During the fourth week, it became mild with the temperature exceeding 14°C. on the 24th. During the last week a plunge of northerly winds brought wintry showers and some fairly low temperatures. On the 29th, the high was only 3.5°C. with a sharp frost on the following night.

April - Cold and rather dry with sunshine slightly above normal.

The only air  frost of the month occurred on the morning of the 1st,  but after a chilly start, temperatures during the first week rose to close to average. Although April was rather unsettled, rainfall was mainly light. However, on the 12th nearly 7mm of rain fell, and on the following day the maximum temperature was only 8.3°C. A similar maximum occurred on the 25th, but at the end of the month it was mainly sunny and warm. The high on the last day of April was 21°C.  

May - Wet with above average sunshine and near normal temperatures.

There were many dry days during May, and after some cloudy mornings, the afternoons were often sunny. However, brisk northeast winds helped to cap maximum temperatures. On the 13th, strong northeast winds and periods of rain, amounting to nearly 39mm,  were responsible for a maximum temperature of only 8.7°C. On the following night, skies cleared, and with light wiinds,  a ground frost occurred. The last week was mostly warm and sunny.

June - Very dry with temperatures slightly below average and sunshine close to normal.

There were some cool nights during this month, and on the first morning the temperature fell below 4°C. Some warm days occurred, however, and on the 8th the temperature rose above 28°C. Between the 10th and 26th no measurable rain fell, and although afternoons were  warm, nights were often cool. On the 24th it remained cloudy all day with a high of only 14.5°C. The last few days of the month were unsettled, and on the 27th over 9mm of rain was measured.

July - Cool and wet with below average sunshine.

Much of the first week was very warm or hot, and on the 4th the afternoon temperature reached 29°C. It then turned cooler and thundery. On the 6th,  over 26mm of rain fell. Although there many dry days during the following 3 weeks, it was frequently cool and rather cloudy. On the night of the 12th/13th the temperature fell close to 8°C. and on the  17th the maximum temperature was only 16.3°C. The last few days of the month were generally warmer and sunnier.

August - Wet, dull and rather cool.

There were a few fine and warm days, these mainly occurring early in the month, but even so, temperatures were largely disappointing for a summer month, and the 10th was the only day during August when the maximum reached 24°C. Some heavy downpours occurred, and on the 13th, nearly 27mm of rain was measured. At the end of the month it became cool, and after a minimum near 7°C. on the morning of the 30th, the high during the day was only 17.3°C.

September - Sunny, but rather cool and wet.

The first 3 weeks of September were mostly dry with sunny periods. Temperatures were close to, or a little above,  normal with a few fairly warm days. On the 17th, the temperature rose close to 24°C. However, light winds and clear skies helped to produce several cool nights. During the last week it turned very unsettled, and on the 28th over 23mm of rain fell as a depression crossed the country. A cold northerly followed with a high of only 10.7°C. on the 30th. 

October - Very dull, cold and rather dry.

The first day of the month was sunny, but thereafter only 8 further days during the month had more than 1 hour of sunshine. Temperatures were mostly below normal, but on the 12th the maximum was close to 18°C. There were many dry days, but the end of the month was changeable, and on the 24th nearly 17mm of rain fell. Colder weather followed,  and on the 27th the maximum temperature was only 8.3°C. Ground frost occurred early on the morning of the 29th.

November - Very cold, rather sunny with slightly below normal rainfall.

Winds were frequently from a northerly point during November and it was generally cold with many frosty nights. There were several sunny days, but after a sunny day on the 10th, nearly 14mm of rain fell on the 11th, and then  the 12th was the mildest day of the month. The coldest weather occurred during the last week as high pressure dominated. On the 27th, the temperature failed to rise above minus 1.0°C., and on the following night the low was close to minus 6°C.

December - Very wet, rather mild and below average sunshine.

There were only 8 days without measurable rain during this very changeable month. No exceptional daily falls occurred, but on the 6th more than 17mm of rain fell.  Frosts were less frequent than usual, but on the night of the 8th/9th there was a frost, but a day later, a warm front from the Atlantic helped to lift the temperature above 13°C. Two days later, the temperature failed to rise above 2.7°C. Mild weather predominated, however, and the month ended very mild.
