1917 Cold and Rather Wet. Very Cold Winter and Early Spring.
In the year that the Danish West Indies was sold to the USA for 25 million dollars, Finland claimed independence from Russia, and King George V changed the family surname from Wettin to Windsor in response to anti-German feelings in the country.
Weather Notes:-
April 1st/2nd - Minimum temperature of minus 15°C at Newton Rigg (Cumbria) and only a degree higher at Eskdalemur (Dumfries and Galloway).
June 16th - 118mm of rain fell in 150 minutes in Kensington (London).
June 28th - Nearly 250mm of rain fell at Bruton (Somerset) with 213mm falling at Aisholt (Somerset).

January Very dull, cold and dry.

Much of the first fortnight of the year was generally mild and unsettled. On the 1st, the temperature rose above 12°C.  On the 11th, over 7mm of rain fell, and it then turned much colder. There was occasional  snow, and the period between the 21st and 30th was particularly wintry.  On both the 26th and 28th the maximum temperature failed to rise above minus 0.4°C., but cloudy nights and a fresh northeast wind prevented temperatures from falling greatly at night. 

February - Very dull, dry and cold.

The first week was very cold and snowy, and on the 2nd the temperature failed to rise above minus 1.5°C. The cold became less severe during the second week, although the minimum temperature on the night of the 7th/8th was minus 10°C. Towards the end of the third week it became much milder, and the final week of the month was rather mild or mild and unsettled with rain at times, but there were also sunny spells. On the 20th, nearly 7mm of rain fell.

March - Very cold and dull with above average rainfall.

In this very wintry 'Spring' month there was snow at times and some severe frosts. After a maximum temperature of just 1.0°C. on the 8th, the minimum on the following night was almost down to minus 6°C. Milder weather arrived during the middle of the second week, and on the 17th the maximum temperature rose above 13°C., but further cold weather,  with wintry showers,  occurred after mid month, and on the 30th nearly 11mm of rain was measured. 

April - Very cold with above average rainfall and slightly below normal sunshine.

Most of the month was very cold with daily temperatures under 10°C. On the 1st, the high was only 4.6°C. There was some snow and frost, especially early in April, and on the opening 2 nights of the month minimum temperatures were close to minus 2°C. On the 2nd, nearly 16mm of rain was recorded. There were some mild and sunny days towards the end of the month with no measurable rain falling after the 22nd,  and on the 30th the temperature reached 16°C. 
May - Warm with rainfall and sunshine above normal.

There was plenty of dry weather during May, and although there were some cool nights, particularly early in the month, there were many warm days. The 17th was an exception. Over 19mm of rain fell, the first rain of the month,  and the maximum temperature failed to rise above 10.5°C. The warmest and sunniest weather occurred  towards the end of May. On the 27th the afternoon temperature rose above 25°C., and on the 28th it was sunny throughout the day.
June - Very wet and warm with slightly below average sunshine.

Measurable rain only fell on 10 days during this June, but severe thunderstorms produced some heavy downpours. A warm spell occurred during the second and third weeks, but on the 16th, more than 43mm of rain fell, before hot sunshine returned in the 17th with the afternoon temperature peaking at a very humid 31°C. There were some cool nights, mainly early in the month, but not many cool days, although on the 30th the maximum was only 14.6°C.   

July - Wet with above normal sunshine and slightly below average temperatures.

There was a rather cool start to the month, but this was followed by plenty of dry weather with temperatures rising. Rain did occur from time to time, but there was some warm and sunny weather, especially during the last 10 days of July. On both the 27th and 28th the afternoon temperature almost reached 26°C. However, the last day of the month was very cool and wet. The maximum temperature was only 13.7°C with over 37mm of rain falling. 
August - Wet and cool with below average sunshine.

This was a very unsettled month with frequents bouts of rain and unseasonably cloudy skies. On the 1st,  nearly 31mm of rain fell, a continuation of the heavy rain that fell at the end of July. It was also very cool with a maximum temperature of 13.9°C. It became warmer at the end of the first week, and on the 7th the afternoon temperature was above 24°C. However, warm days were few and far between during the remainder of the month and further heavy rain fell.

September - Above average sunshine and temperatures, and slightly above normal rainfall.

Although the month was changeable, there were plenty of dry and fairly sunny days. There were no very warm days during the month, but temperatures were above average on several occasions, especially during the early part of September. The temperature on the 5th rose above 22°C. Rainfall was mostly light, but nearly 14mm was recorded. The coolest weather occurred during the last few days of the month, with a maximum temperature on the 28th of 16.2°C.

October - Cold and sunny, but wet.

This was a very changeable month with strong winds and fast moving frontal systems crossing the country. At first it was fairly warm, and on the opening 2 days of October the temperature rose above 20°C. On the 4th nearly 15mm of rain fell and at the end of the first week it turned colder.  Winds were frequently from the northwest during the remainder of the month, and after a frost early on the 28th, the temperature during the day failed to rise above 7.1°C.  

November - Dry, rather dull and mild.

There were plenty of dry, but rather cloudy, days during this month, and the cloud cover helped to keep the nights milder than during the preceding October. There was only 1 air frost, on the night of the 16th/17th. No particularly cold days occurred during November, although the maximum temperature on the 15th was only 7.3°C. There were several mild and damp days. On the 21st the temperature almost reached 15°C., and on the 26th nearly 10mm of rain fell.

December - Cold, dry and sunny.

There was some mild weather early in December, and on the 1st the temperature rose above 11°C.  It was changeable, but after the 9th, when over 11mm of rain fell, it became drier and colder but with plenty of sunshine. It was particularly cold at the end of the third week with some snow. The temperature only reached minus 1.6°C. on the 19th, with a minimum below minus 5°C. on the following night.  It became a little less cold  after the 21st, but with further sunny spells.
