1921 Warm and Sunny, and Extremely Dry

Weather Notes:-
25th June- The temperature reached 32°C. in Manchester.
20th October - In this very dry year, a rare wet day with heavy rain in Kent, Sussex and the Isle of Wight. At Tunbridge Wells (Kent) there was a rainfall total of 62mm.
27th and 28th November- In a month when dense fog caused much disruption to transport across England, these days were particularly bad and resulted in road and rail travel being suspended in parts of London and Southern England.

Most of the first fortnight was very mild and cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Much of the rain was light, but on the 7th, nearly 12mm of rain fell. Maximum temperatures were generally between 10 and 12°C., but the high on the 9th exceeded 13°C. There was a short brighter, but cooler interlude around mid month, and  the highest temperature on the 15th was only 4.5°C. After a sharp frost early on the 16th, the very mild and changeable weather returned.
February - Very dry, mild and rather dull

The beginning of the month was cold, and after a frost early on the 3rd, the temperature during the day failed to rise above 2.6°C.  There was mist and plenty of cloud, but it became milder, and during the last week of February it became very mild with sunny spells. The maximum temperature on both the 23rd and 24th was close to 15°C., but on the 25th, over 4mm of rain fell, 1 of only 2 days during the month with measurable rain. The following day was sunny.

March - Very mild with below average rainfall and above normal sunshine.

The early part of March was rather cold and showery  with some of the showers turning wintry. On the 6th nearly 7mm of rain fell, and on the 7th the maximum temperature was only 6.5°C. It then became milder, and although some light rain fell occasionally, there were several dry and fairly sunny days. Towards the end of the month there were some very mild weather, and the temperature on the 24th exceeded 17°C. Further rain fell, and on the 28th nearly 7mm was measured.

April - Dry and sunny with temperatures close to average.

There were some mild and sunny days during the first fortnight of April, but with several chilly nights. The third week was much cloudier and cooler, and the maximum temperature on the 17th was only 5.0°C. During the fourth week the weather became changeable and, near the end of the month, considerably warmer and sunnier. On the 23rd, over 11mm of rain fell, and the temperature on the 28th exceeded 21°C. The following day was sunny from dawn until dusk.

May - Dry and rather sunny with above average temperatures.

There was some cool and showery weather early in the month, and on the 4th, after an early ground frost,  the maximum temperature was only 9.1°C., and over 4mm of rain fell. The second week was warmer and sunnier, but this was followed by a more changeable and cooler third week. However, the sunshine returned in the fourth week and it became warm at times. The 23rd was sunny all day, and on the 24th the maximum temperature was close to 24°C.

June - Very dry with slightly above average sunshine and temperatures close to normal.

After a sunny start to June, nearly 4mm of rain fell on the 3rd, 1 of only 3 occasions during the month with measurable rainfall. No rain was recorded between the 4th and the 19th, but it was often rather cloudy with temperatures generally slightly below, average. On the 19th, the afternoon high was only 15.8°C., and on the following day it rained. There were some warm and sunny days late in the month, and the maximum temperature on the 25th was above 29°C.

The first week of July  was rather cool and cloudy at times. The maximum temperature on the 4th was only 17.6°C. The second week became very warm or hot and sunny. The afternoon temperature almost reached 32°C. on the 10th and this was followed by a day of unbroken sunshine on the 11th. On the 14th, over 1mm of rain fell, but although rain fell on 4 other days during July it was very light, and the remainder of the month was mostly dry, warm and sunny.

August - Dry with below average sunshine and temperatures close to normal.

There were a few warm and sunny days, but generally the first 3 weeks were rather cloudy and changeable. There were many dry days, though, and temperatures were not far from normal. On the 13th, nearly 10mm of rain fell, but the maximum on the 19th was 27°C. The fourth week was cooler for a while, and the temperature on the 21st only rose to 16.6°C., but after the 24th no more measurable rain fell, and the last few days of August were warmer. 

September - Rather warm and sunny with below average rainfall.

The first 9 days of September were dry, and the weather was often warm and sunny.  The afternoon temperature on the 8th was above 27°C. A short unsettled occurred from the 10th, and on the 11th nearly 20mm of rain fell. After the 13th, no further rain fell during September. It was rather cool and cloudy for a while, and on the 17th the temperature failed to rise above 16.2°C., but as the month progressed it became warmer again with lengthy spells of sunshine. 

October - Very sunny, warm and dry.

The temperature exceeded 21°C. on each of the first 11 days of the month, and on the 5th, the  high was close to 28°C. The first 9 days were dry, and although the weather became less warm, there were still many dry and sunny days until the end of the third week. On the 18th, the temperature exceeded 21°C. again. Measurable rain only fell on 7 days during October, but 6mm was recorded on the 22nd, and on the 24th the maximum temperature was only 9.4°C.

November - Very dull, cold and rather dry.

The first few days of November were mostly very mild, windy and often wet. The temperature was above 14°C. on both the 1st and the 4th, and on the 4th over 10mm of rain fell. At the end of the first week the weather became fairly settled, and for a while there was sunshine by day and frost overnight.  However, it became increasingly dull and misty, and there was some very dense fog, particularly on the 27th and 28th. On the 27th, the temperature only reached  1.8°C.

December - Mild, rather dry and dull

There were several dry days early in December, although nearly 6mm of rain fell on the 1st. It was misty at times, and during the first week it was cold for a while. The temperature on the 4th only reached 2.9°C., with a rare December frost on the following night. Generally, it was mild or very mild, particularly during the second half of the month. On the 28th, the temperature almost reached 14°C. Skies were often overcast but amounts of rain were mostly small.
