1929 Dry, Sunny and Rather Cold. Cold and Dry Spring
In the year of the 'Wall Street Crash' in the New York Stock Exchange, the British General Election resulted in power being retained by a minority Labour Government led by Ramsay MacDonald, and 'Herge's Adventures of Tintin' commenced in the children's section of a Belgian newspaper.
Weather Notes:-
16th February - Holne Chase, west of Newton Abbot (Devon) had nearly 2m of level snow in 15 hours.
31st March - The end of a month with no measurable rain in parts of London, including Enfield, St; James's Park, Stroud Green and Tottenham. 
11th November - Lluest Wen Reservoir, north of Pontypridd (Glamorgan) had 211mm of rain.

January - Very dry, dull and cold.

The first half of January was cold or very cold with sleet or snow at times. The temperature on the 6th only reached 0.1°C. On the 10th, a mixture of sleet and snow gave the equivalent of more than 7mm of rain. After mid month, although very frosty at first, including a minimum temperature below minus 4°C. on the 17th, it slowly became milder but remained generally dry. On the 19th it was sunny all day, and on the 31st, the maximum temperature rose above 10°C.

February - Very cold, dull and dry.

Early February was fairly mild and changeable. On the 1st, over 4mm of rain fell and the temperature exceeded 11°C. During the second week very cold east winds developed with snow at times, and although the cold spell only lasted just over a week, there were 5 consecutive days with maxima below 0°C. On the 13th, the high was minus 3.4°C, with a low near minus 11°C on the morning of the 15th. Another very cold snap occurred at the end of the month.  

March - Very dry and sunny with below normal temperatures.

In this extremely dry month there was no measurable rain until the 24th. On the 25th, a total of 0.5mm was recorded, with only 1 further day during the month when significant rain fell. After a cold start to March, day-time temperatures recovered and there were several mild days. However, on the 15th, the highest temperature was only 3.6°C. There were many frosty nights early in the month, but the last week  was sunny and warm, with a high close to 20°C. on the 29th.

April - Dry and cold with below average sunshine.

The first 2 weeks of April were mostly cold and changeable, but with pressure fairly high, amounts of precipitation were mostly small. On the 11th, a mixture of rain, sleet and snow gave more than 5mm in total, and on the following day the temperature only rose to 3.7°C. After mid month there were several warm and sunny days, and on the 19th the high was close to 21°C. The end of the month was cooler and unsettled, and on the 29th 5mm of rain fell.

May - Rather dry and sunny with temperatures slightly below normal.

The month began clear and frosty with a dawn low close to minus 1°C. It remained cold through the day and the afternoon high was only 10.8°C. There was some unsettled weather during the first week, and on the 5th nearly 12mm of rain fell. Temperatures remained mostly below average until after mid month, but it became mainly dry with sunny periods. After mid month, there were several very warm and sunny days. On the 23rd the temperature reached 27°C.
June - Dry and rather cool with average sunshine.

There was plenty of dry, but rather cloudy and cool, weather, early in June. Around the middle of the month, it was changeable, and on both the 13th and 14th nearly 5mm of rain fell. At the end of the third week there was some warm and sunny weather, and on the 19th it was sunny all day with a maximum temperature above 26°C. The month ended with some very cool, cloudy and damp conditions. On the 30th, the maximum temperature was only 14.0°C.

July - Sunny with rainfall and temperature slightly above normal.

The early part of July was rather cool and changeable, although amounts of rain were mostly small. On the 1st, the maximum temperature was only 16.2°C. During the second week, the weather became dry, sunny and warm. On the 16th, the afternoon temperature was close to 31°C. Although the very warm conditions persisted until the last week of the month, it became increasingly humid and thundery. On the 20th, evening thunderstorms gave 36mm of rain.

August - Slightly below average temperature and rainfall with sunshine close to normal.

The first 3 weeks of August were often rather cool and cloudy, although there were also a few warm and sunny days. On the 18th, the temperature only reached 18.0°C. There was plenty of dry weather, but some wet days occurred, and on the 16th, over 17mm of rain fell. The month stayed dry after the 23rd, and during the last week there were several sunny days. It was humid at times and it became  warm. On the 31st, the afternoon temperature rose above 29°C.

September - Very dry, warm and sunny.

Sunny and warm weather prevailed during the beginning of September, and the maximum temperature on the 4th was above 29°C. It became cooler at times after mid month, and on the 19th the afternoon high was 18.4°C. There were further sunny and pleasantly warm days in the last 2 weeks of September,  but the first measurable rain of the month fell on the 29th, amounting to over 1mm, and on the 30th, another  3mm was added to the monthly total. 

October - Rather cold and wet with above average sunshine.

The first 3 weeks of October were changeable, although amounts of rain were generally small. It was windy at times with temperatures alternating between the rather cold and rather mild category. However, on the 16th, the maximum afternoon value was 18°C.  On the 24th, nearly 21mm of rain fell, and it then became much colder. On the early morning of the 27th the temperature fell close to minus 1°C., and the maximum value during the day was only 5.1°C. 

November - Very wet and sunny with temperatures close to average.

Areas of low pressure were near, or over, the British Isles throughout the month bringing bands of rain interspersed with mainly sunny days. On the 8th, the temperature exceeded 15°C., and on the 9th it was sunny all day. A short quieter interlude allowed a frost to form under clear skies on the night of the 14th/15th, and during the day the temperature only reached 5.2°C. However, unsettled weather soon returned, and on the 16th nearly 27mm of rain fell.

December - Very wet, sunny and mild.

Atlantic weather systems regularly crossed the country during December bringing fast-moving rain bands. As a result, although rain fell on most days, and on the 5th over 14mm was recorded, the duration was short and sunny spells also frequently occurred.  It was mainly mild and windy, but in a short wintry interlude at the beginning of the third week, there were some overnights frosts, and on the 20th the maximum temperature was only 3.2°C.
