The month was very unsettled and often windy as a succession of weather systems crossed the country from the Atlantic. It was mostly mild early in January, and the temperature on the 9th exceeded 13°C. At the beginning of the third week there was a short cold snap with some snow, and on the 14th the temperature only reached 0.4°C. It became milder at the end of the third week and the changeable weather continued. On the 28th, nearly 18mm of rain fell.

February - Cold and rather sunny with slightly above average rainfall.
 Mean Temperature  3.2°C
Monthly Highest 11.9°C  Total Rain 41 mm
Monthly Lowest -5.0°C Total Sun 74 hrs

Although the weather was changeable, there were plenty of dry days with spells of sunshine during February. Temperatures were close to normal at first, but it was cold for a time during the second week, and after a high of only 0.4°C. on the 11th, the temperature on the following night dropped to minus 5°C. A milder spell followed during the third week with a maximum temperature close to 12°C., but after nearly 9mm of rain fell on the 22nd it turned colder again.

March - Mild, dry and dull.
 Mean Temperature  7.8°C
Monthly Highest 16.8°C  Total Rain 23 mm
Monthly Lowest -2.5°C Total Sun 78 hrs

The early part of March was cold with a little sleet and snow, and on both the 1st and 4th the temperature failed to rise above 4.0°C. It then became milder, and although there were large amounts of cloud at times, dry weather predominated. On the 21st, the temperature rose close to 17°C. and there were spells of warm sunshine during the last 10 days. However, there were also some outbreaks of rain, and on the 25th, nearly 8mm was recorded.

April - Cold and rather dull with below average rainfall.
 Mean Temperature  7.0°C
Monthly Highest 17.1°C  Total Rain 43 mm
Monthly Lowest -0.8°C Total Sun 132 hrs

The wind was mainly between northwest and northeast during April, often quite strong, and bringing plenty of cloud. As a consequence, there were few frosts but the days were frequently cold. There were showers, some of which were wintry, but generally precipitation was light. On the 13th, the maximum temperature was only 6.2°C, and on the 20th nearly 11m of rain fell. However, during the last week it became dry and  warmer, and 17°C was reached on the 28th.

May - Very dry with average temperatures and sunshine.
 Mean Temperature 12.4°C
Monthly Highest 25.0°C  Total Rain  13 mm
Monthly Lowest  3.0°C Total Sun 199 hrs

No measurable rain fell during the first 16 days of May, and although some days were warm, a persistent east to northeast wind often brought low cloud and cool air westwards from the southern North Sea. On the 16th, the temperature rose to 25°C. but the weather then turned cooler and unsettled. On the 22nd, over 4mm of rain fell, 1 of only 5 days during the month when rain was measured. June - Very wet, rather warm with below average sunshine.
 Mean Temperature 16.5°C

The first half of June was mostly rather cool and unsettled. On the 3rd, the temperature only reached 14.6°C. and there were some cool nights. On the 13th, over 14mm of rain fell, and during the month as a whole there were several thunderstorms nearby with short, sharp downpours. After mid month a warm spell developed, and this lasted until the final week. Although thundery at times, there were some sunny days, and on the 20th the high was just under 30°C.

July - Dull and cool with rainfall slightly below average.
 Mean Temperature 16.6°C

In this cyclonic July it was frequently cloudy and breezy with few warm days. On the 9th, the temperature only reached 16.1°C and rain became heavy for a while overnight resulting in nearly 14mm by morning. There were many showery days, and although most of the daily totals were small there were only 11 days when no measurable rain was recorded. There were a few bright days, mainly in the last 2 weeks, and on the 17th the temperature rose above 24°C.

August - Very dry with sunshine and temperatures close to normal.
 Mean Temperature 17.2°C
Monthly Highest 26.6°C  Total Rain  12 mm
Monthly Lowest  8.3°C Total Sun 185 hrs

The early part of August was rather cool and cloudy, and on the 7th,  the temperature struggled to reach 15.4°C. Measurable rain only fell on 6 days during the month and most of it was light. On the 11th, nearly 6mm of rain fell. After mid month, there were increasing amounts of sunshine, and with plenty of dry weather the days became warmer. On the 29th, the temperature rose close to 27°C, but despite the warm days there were several chilly nights.

September - Dull, wet and rather warm.
 Mean Temperature 15.4°C
Monthly Highest 23.1°C  Total Rain 71 mm
Monthly Lowest  5.6°C Total Sun 90 hrs

There was some fairly warm weather at the beginning of the month, and on the 3rd the temperature rose above 23°C. There were several other days when the maximum value was around 20°C, but plenty of cloud and an often brisk southwest wind prevented temperatures from rising higher. Rain fell quite frequently, occasionally with thunder, and on the 5th over 19mm fell. On the 27th, the temperature only reached 12.6°C but the end of the month was dry.

October - Rather cold and dry with below average sunshine.
 Mean Temperature  9.7°C
Monthly Highest 18.2°C  Total Rain 45 mm
Monthly Lowest  0.4°C Total Sun 91 hrs

No rain fell during the first 13 days of October, and although some sunny spells occurred it was often disappointingly cool and cloudy. On the 8th, the temperature only reached 10.2°C. Around mid month it became unsettled and often windy. However, there were some dry, bright and mild days, and on the 15th, the temperature exceeded 18°C. After a grass frost early on the 29th, there was a wet end to the month with nearly 21mm measured on the 31st.

November - Rather cold and dull with above average rainfall.
 Mean Temperature  6.5°C
Monthly Highest 13.3°C  Total Rain 71 mm
Monthly Lowest -0.2°C Total Sun 41 hrs

The month was rather changeable and often cloudy. However, the opening day of November was sunny. There was little in the way of temperature variations during the month, and although there were several ground frosts, the only air frost occurred on the 25th. No prolonged heavy rain occurred, but on the 12th, over 14mm fell. The temperature rose above 13°C. on the 17th, before a brief colder interlude occurred in the last week, with a high on the 24th of only 2.7°C.

December - Sunny, dry and rather mild.
 Mean Temperature  5.7°C
Monthly Highest 12.7°C  Total Rain 35 mm
Monthly Lowest -2.3°C Total Sun 59 hrs

There was a very mild start to December, and on the 2nd, the temperature rose close to 13°C. The end of the first week became colder, though, and on the 7th, after an early frost, the temperature was unable to rise above 1.7°C. There were many sunny days during this December, but after a sunny day on the 13th, outbreaks of rain followed on the 14th giving a total not far short of 13mm. This fall was an exception in a month when rainfall was generally light.
