1937 Wet and Rather Dull. A Mild and Wet Winter.
In the year that the German Luftwaffe destroyed Guernica (Northern Spain) during the Spanish Civil War, Neville Chamberlain became British Prime Minister, the Coronation of King George the Sixth took place in London, and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco opened.
Weather Notes:-
28th February - Snow affected much of the country, with 20 to 30 cm over the northern half of Scotland and locally over North Wales.
15th July - Severe thunderstorms affected much of England with totals of 50mm widespread in the south, with over 100mm in parts of the Midlands and eastern England.
13th August - Torrential rain over much of Greater London with totals of 90mm at Beddington (near Croydon) and 52mm in 30 minutes at Acton.

Most of the month was changeable and mild as a series of Atlantic frontal systems crossed the country. On the 1st, nearly 15mm of rain fell, and on the 6th, the maximum temperature exceeded 12°C. Some drier and brighter interludes occurred, and the 10th was a sunny day. However, there were several more bands of rain each producing 5 to 10mm. At the end of the month it turned colder, and on the 29th snow fell with the temperature only rising to minus 0.2°C.

February - Very wet and mild with near normal sunshine.

This was a very unsettled month as Atlantic depressions, or their associated fronts, crossed the British Isles. It was often very mild, windy and wet. The only frost of the month occurred on the night of the 11th/12th. In a  wet end to February month, over 17mm of rain fell on the 22nd, and on the 28th sleet and wet snow fell in the strong northwesterly wind following the passage eastwards of a deep depression. The maximum temperature for the day was only 2.2°C.

March - Cold and wet with average sunshine.

The first half of March was mostly cold with overnight frosts and wintry showers. Some longer spells of sleet and snow occurred, and on the 7th, the equivalent of over 15mm of rain was measured. The maximum temperature on the 8th was only 2.5°C., and on the night of the 9th/10th the temperature fell below minus 3°C. The second half of the month was mostly milder and drier, but large amounts of cloud tended to keep daytime temperatures depressed. 

April - Very dull and rather mild with above average rainfall.

The only April frost occurred early on the first morning. but after a fine start to the month the weather soon became unsettled. On the 2nd, nearly 15mm of rain fell. Winds frequently blew from a northeasterly direction, leaving nights cloudy and mild with occasional drizzle, and days with cloud cover reluctant to clear. On the 23rd, the temperature exceeded 16°C. and the 25th was sunny all day, but the cloud cover returned on the 29th with an afternoon high of only 9.4°C.  

May - Rather warm with above average rainfall and below normal sunshine.

The first 3 weeks of May were mostly unsettled with temperatures fairly close to average. However, there were some cooler interludes, and on the 9th, the maximum temperature was only 11.3°C. On the 21st , nearly 14mm of rain fell but it then became much drier, warmer and sunnier. On the 28th it was sunny all day, and on the 29th the afternoon temperature climbed close to 27°C. Although there were further spells of sunshine, the end of the month became cooler.   

June - Slightly above average rainfall with temperatures and sunshine close to normal

There was plenty of dry weather during the early part of June, and although rather cool at first, it became rather warm or warm for a while. On the 6th, there was almost unbroken sunshine, and the afternoon temperature on the 11th rose above 27°C. During the latter part of the second week the weather became unsettled and cooler. On the 13th, over 13mm of rain fell, and the maximum temperature on the 19th was only 16.3°C. It then became warmer and drier again.

July - Dry and dull with near normal temperatures.

The first 3 weeks of July were changeable, and although often cloudy,  amounts of rain were mostly small. It was rather cool at times, but on the 3rd  the temperature almost reached 28°C, Around the middle of the month there was a week of warm weather. There were thunderstormss preceding a sunny day on the 16th, and on the 19th nearly 13mm of rain fell. The last week of July was dry but rather cool, and the highest temperature on the 27th was only 17.9°C.  

August - Warm and rather wet with above average sunshine.

The beginning of August was dry, sunny and very warm. On the 6th, the afternoon temperature exceeded 29°C. The weather turned thundery during the second week, and on the 10th the first rain of the month fell. On the 13th, over 54mm of rain fell, and after mid month it became cooler. No measurable rain fell after the 16th, and although it was fairly warm at first, the last week of August became cooler. The maximum temperature on the 27th was only 17.9°C.

September - Above average temperatures and sunshine,  and near normal rainfall.

Although rain fell on the 1st, much of the first week was dry with sunny periods. It was rather warm at times, and on the 7th, the temperature reached 24°C. The weather was unsettled and cooler during the second and third weeks, and on both the 11th and 19th the maximum temperature was only 13.9°C.On the 17th, over 14mm of rain fell, but during the last week of the month there was plenty of dry weather with sunny periods and it became a little warmer.

October - Dull and rather mild with slightly above average rainfall.

There was some relatively warm and sunny weather during the first week of October, and on the 2nd, the temperature rose above 19°C. During the second week it was often grey and misty, and although temperatures were above average at first, it became cooler. On the 13th, the maximum temperature was only 11.8°C. Rather cloudy skies persisted through the month, and although mainly dry at first it became increasingly unsettled. On the 27th, over 14mm of rain fell.

November - Dry, cold and rather dull.

The first fortnight of November was mainly unsettled with temperatures mostly above average. On the 1st, over 14mm of rain fell, and the maximum tewmperature on the 4th was above 12°C. The first frost of the month occurred early on the 13th, and although the 14th was a sunny day, much of the remainder of the month was rather cloudy and misty, but generally it stayed dry. It was cold at times, and on the 21st, the afternoon temperature failed to rise above 3.0°C. 

December - Very dull, wet and cold.

After a mild start,  the first 3 weeks of December were mostly cold and unsettled. On the 12th, it was sunny nearly all day but the following day was wet, and a mixture of rain and snow gave a total of nearly 25mm. There were some sharp frosts during the third week, and the maximum temperature on both the 19th and 20th was only 2.1°C. Just before Christmas, the weather became much milder and the maximum temperature on the 23rd was above 11°C.
