1938 Dry and Mild. Very dry early Spring. A White Christmas
In the year that Germany annexed Austria, oil was first discovered in Saudi Arabia and the world speed record for a steam locomotive was set by 'Mallard' on a track south of Grantham (Lincolnshire) with a speed of 126 mph (over 204 kph).
Weather Notes:-
2nd June - Maximum temperature of only 8°C. at Buxton (Derbyshire).
4th August - Over 160mm of rain fell in Torquay during thunderstorms that included hail the size of walnuts.
20th December - Bitterly cold easterly winds in the run up to a white Christmas produced heavy snow over parts of southern and eastern England, and a maximum temperature of only minus 6°C. at Lympne (Kent).

January Very mild with slightly above average rainfall and near normal sunshine.

In this changeable and air frost-free month there were no cold days, although a brief cooler interlude occurred during the second week. On the 10th the temperature failed to rise above 4.6°C. and there was a ground frost on the following night, but generally nights were mild. Rain fell frequently but it was mostly light, although over 11mm was recorded on the 13th. Temperatures rose above 10°C. on many days, and the maximum on the 24th was above 12°C.
February - Very dry, rather mild and  sunny.

Early February was mild and rather changeable, but amounts of rain were small.  Around mid month, there were some wintry showers, driven along by brisk northwesterly winds. On the 14th the temperature failed to rise above 2.5°C.  It became milder after the third week and on the 25th, after an overnight low of minus 2°C., it became very mild by lafternoon with a high of 13°C. On the following day, over 3mm of rain fell, 1 of only 7 days during February with measurable rain.
March - Very mild, sunny and dry.

After a little rain on the opening day of the month, no more measurable rain then occurred until the 25th. It was largely sunny during this dry period,  and although there were a few chilly nights, including a slight frost on the night of the 7th/8th, days were very mild. On the 20th, the temperature rose above 18°C. On the 25th, nearly 5mm of rain fell, 1 of only 3 days during March with significant rain, and on the following day the maximum temperature was only 9.5°C.

April - Very dry and rather cold with below average sunshine.

Measurable rain only fell on three days during this month,  and no rain fell between the 4th and the 23rd. On the 1st, the temperature rose to 17°C., but after nearly 2mm of rain fell on the 3rd, it turned colder. There were some sunny days, and a few slight frosts, but on many days there was plenty of cloud. This helped to depress temperatures and made April a colder month than the precceding March. On the 18th the maximum temperature was only 8.2°C.
May - Sunny, rather cool and dry.

The first week of May was cool or very cool, and on the 3rd the temperature failed to rise above 9.9°C. A slight frost occurred on the night of the 7th/8th but then it became warmer. The temperature almost reached 24°C. on the 14th,  The second half of the month was changeable with rain bands alternating with sunshine and showers. Temperatures were mostly near, or rather below, normal, Rainfall was mainly light, but over 12mm was recorded on the 28th,
June - Very dry with above normal temperatures and slightly below normal sunshine.

The month started cool, very windy and changeable. A gust of 55kn occurred on the night of the 1st/2nd. and on the 2nd, the temperature failed to rise above 13.8°C. It became mainly dry, and generally warmer as June progressed, and on the 21st the temperature exceeded 25°C for the only time during the month. The last few days of June were unsettled and on the 27th over 4mm of rain fell. It was windy, too, with further very strong winds occurring on the 28th.

July Dry, dull and rather cool.

There was plenty of dry weather during July, but skies were often rather cloudy.  Several cool days occurred, and the maximum temperature on both the 5th and 16th was just 17.1°C. Measurable rain only fell on 8 days during July and most of it was light. However, nearly 7mm of rain was recorded on the 27th and this was followed by a change to sunnier and warmer weather. The 29th was a sunny day, and on the 31st the afternoon temperatute rose above 27°C. 

August - Rather wet and dull with above average temperatures.

The first week of August was warm and thundery. On the 1st, the temperature almost reached 29°C. During the second week, the weather became cooler and changeable and there was some heavy rain. On the 11th, over 18mm of rain fell.  The remainder of the month was rather cloudy and unsettled, although there were several more fairly warm and fine days. The last few days of the month became cool, and the temperature on the 29th only reached 14.7°C.

September - Below average sunshine, and near normal temperatues and rainfall.

There were many dry days during the first half of September, and although rather cool, and often cloudy, at first, the weather became warmer and sunnier during the second week. The afternoon temperature exceeded 24°C. on the 15th it was sunny all day. During the last 2 weeks of September temperatures were generally lower and there a few wet days. The maximum temperature on the 21st only reached 16.1°C., and on the 27th over 21mm of rain fell.  

October - Above normal sunshine, below average rainfall and near normal temperatures

The first 2 weeks of October were mostly mild, breezy and changeable, with plenty of cloud and occasional rain or drizzle. On the 3rd, over 10mm of rain fell, and the maximum temperature on the 9th almost reached 18°C. An interlude of settled weather around mid month was followed by a colder and unsettled last week to October. Sunny, then clear, spells allowed some grass frosts overnight, and on the 25th the maximum temperature was only 8.9°C.
November - Very mild and rather sunny with rainfall slightly above normal.

Very mild south to southwest winds blew for the first 3 weeks, and although some rain occurred, much of the time was dry with sunny spells. On the 5th, after a dawn low of 14.4°C., the day was sunny and the temperature rose to 19°C. Towards the end of November, the weather became more unsettled with  lower temperatures. Over 15mm of rain fell on the 20th; the first autumn frost occurred early on the 27th, and the maximum temperature on the 29th was only 6.7°C. 
December - Sunny, wet and rather cold.

The first half of December was mild or very mild and changeable with fast-moving rain bands followed by sunny spells. On both the 11th and 12th the temperature reached 13°C, and on the 16th, over 26mm of rain fell. On the 17th, the top temperature was 8°C. but snow fell on the following day with a high of minus 2°C, the first of 4 days with sub-zero maxima. The high on the 20th was only minus 2.9°C. and on the 26th over 10cm of snow was lying.It then became milder.
