1940 Rather Cold and Sunny. Cold Winter.
In the year that Neville Chamberlain resigned and Winston Churchill became UK Prime Minister, the Battle of Britain and the London Blitz occurred, Stone Age cave painting were discovered at Lascaux in France, and the Walt Disney film 'Fantasia' was released.
Weather Notes:-
21st January - After a very cold night over most of the country, minima were between minus 19°C. and minus 21°C in many places, including Ambleside (Cumbria), Canterbury (Kent) and Hereford. At Rhayader (Mid Wales) the temperature fell below minus 23°C.
10th July - Very heavy rain in parts of central and eastern England and eastern Scotland. Totals of 25 to 50mm, with over 100mm in Scarborough (North Yorkshire)
11th September - The 46th, and last, day without measurable rain in Regent's Park (London).

The beginning of January was mainly dry and very cold with frosty nights. At the end of the first week it became unsettled and temporarily milder but cold and mostly dry weather returned during the middle of the second week. On the 20th, after an early low close to minus 9°C. the temperature during the day only reached minus 2.4°C. After a brief milder interlude, persistent rain, much of it freezing, gave nearly 28mm on the 27th, with a very cold and snowy end to the month. 

February - Very dull and rather cold with near normal rainfall.

The first 2 days of February were cold but it then became milder, dull and misty. During the second week it became very cold but with plenty of dry, if rather cloudy, weather. There were frosty nights, and the maximum temperature on the 14th was only minus 1.1°C. On the 19th, snow turned to rain, producing a total of nearly 9mm. The remainder of the month was milder and fairly changeable, as Atlantic frontal systems brought bands of rain but also a few sunny days. 

March - Very wet with above average sunshine and near normal temperatures.

The early part of March was rather cold with sunshine and showers by day and frost by night. On the 1st, the maximum temperature was only 5.4°C. The second week was changeable and milder with the 13th being a particularly wet day. On the 18th, the high exceeded 15°C., but generally temperatures during the second half of March were only around normal. There were a few fairly sunny days, but wet days also occurred, and on the 26th, nearly 28mm of rain was recorded.  

April - Dull with below average rainfall and slightly above normal temperatures.

The first 10 days of April were often rather cold and cloudy, although there were some sunny days followed by slight overnight frosts. On the 10th, the maximum temperature was only 7.7°C. and on the following night the last air frost of the Spring occurred. It then became generally milder, and on the 23rd the afternoon temperature exceeded 20°C. The last week of the month was cooler, and also changeable. On the 30th, over 9mm of rain was measured.

May - Sunny, rather warm and dry.

There were many dry and fairly sunny days during the early part of May. Temperatures were mostly above average, but on the 11th, the passage of a weak cold front resulted in a maximum temperature of 15.5°C. Plenty of sunshine followed at the end of the second week, and on the 15th, the temperature rose above 23°C. Rather warm and generally sunny weather continued through the third week, but it then became unsettled. On the 22nd, over 19mm of rain fell.
  
June - Sunny, warm and rather dry.

Temperatures rose during the first week of June and it became very warm or hot. On the 8th, the afternoon high almost reached 30°C. The very warm weather continued into the middle of the second week, but it became thundery, and on the 9th, nearly 16mm of rainfall was recorded. During the remainder of June, high pressure brought many dry days, and it was mostly rather warm. However, the 23rd was a dull day, and the temperature only reached 16.6°C.

July - Cool with above average rainfall and sunshine.

The beginning of July was warm and sunny, and the afternoon temperature on the 2nd rose above 25°C. It then became cooler and changeable as Atlantic fronts crossed the country. A few dry and fairly sunny days occurred, and occasionally temperatures approached normal. Generally, however, it was cool and showery, with  some longer spells of rain. On the 21st, over 10mm of rain was recorded, and on the 24th, the maximum temperature was only 16.4°C. 

August - Very dry with above average sunshine and slightly below normal temperatures.

High pressure over, or to the west of, the British Isles, dominated the weather throughout the month. It was warm at first and the temperature exceeded 26°C. on the 4th. However, winds from the northwest or north gave many rather cool days with cloudy afternoons. Showers produced over 1mm of rain on the 10th, and at the end of the third week there were several cool, cloudy and breezy days with a little rain. On the 23rd, the afternoon temperature only reached 16.5°C.
 
September - Rather cool, dry and sunny.

The first week of September was dry and warm with sunny periods. On the 4th it was sunny all day with the temperature rising above 26°C. The second week was rather changeable and cooler, but amounts of rain were small. After mid month, although several dry days occurred, Atlantic weather systems became more active. On the 19th, over 18mm of rain fell, and towards the end of the month it became very cool.. The maximum on the 29th was only 13.1°C.

October - Rather cold with above average rainfall and slightly below normal sunshine.

The opening 4 weeks of the month were changeable with temperatures mostly near, or slightly below, normal. There were some dry days, and on the 7th, it was sunny all day. Much of the rain was light, but on the 16th, over 17mm fell. On the 20th, the temperature rose above 17°C., but during the last few days of October winds blew from the north and it became much colder. On the 29th, there was a frost early and late, and the maximum temperature was only 8.6°C.  
 
November - Very wet and sunny with near normal temperatures.

This was a very cyclonic month, and although the changeable nature of the weather allowed plenty of sunshine, there were also showers, or longer spells of heavy rain. Thunder was heard on 3 days during November, and on the 3rd, over 35mm of rain fell. On the 4th, the temperature almost reached 15°C., but there were several frosty nights, and at the end of the month there were some rather cold days. The maximum temperature on the 30th was only 4.6°C. 

December - Dry and rather cold with below average sunshine.

There was plenty of dry weather during December, and the rain that fell was mainly light. Several slight frosts occurred, although the temperature early on the morning of the 1st dipped below minus 3°C. The 6th was a sunny day, but there were often large amounts of cloud and there were a few grey and cold days. The temperature on the 22nd only reached 1.8°C. It then became milder, but after nearly 7mm of rain fell on the 30th, the last day of the year became colder.
