1942 Rather Cold and Dry. Cold Winter and Dull Autumn.
In the year that Thailand declared war on both the UK and the USA, the Oxford Committee of Famine Relief (OXFAM) was founded, and the film Casablanca, starring Humphey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, was premiered in New York.
Weather Notes:-
19th/20th January - Heavy snow over much of the British Isles. Level depths of 30-40cm were recorded in Scotland and northern England, around 20cm in the Midlands, and generally 10-15 cm in southern England and Wales.
3rd March - Temperatures stayed below freezing over much of the Midlands and Southern England, with maxima of only minus 3°C. over Oxfordshire and the suburbs of Birmingham.
26th September - Dawn temperature at Dalwhinnie (Inverness-shire) was close minus 7°C.

Temperatures were close to normal at first, and the high on the 4th was above 10°C. However, during the second week it became very cold and snowy. The temperature on the morning of the 15th was close to minus 8°C. Periods of snow on the 19th gave a depth of 15cm by the morning of the 20th, but after a high of only minus 3.0°C. on the 22nd a thaw set in. Snow, followed by rain, gave nearly 16mm on the 23rd, and then the remainder of the month was milder.

February - Very dull, cold and dry.

There were only 3 frost-free nights during this February, although daytime temperatures were near normal at first. On the 1st, over 9mm of rain were recorded, but it became cold later in the first week with snow at times. The maximum temperature on the 8th was only minus 0.7°C. There was a milder second week with some sunny spells, but it then became very cold and rather cloudy but with frosty nights. However, it was dry, with no measurable rain after the 9th.

March - Very dull and rather cold with above average rainfall.

After a dry start to the month, rain and snow gave the equivalent of over 13mm of rain on the 4th. It then became very cold, and the maximum temperature on the 6th was only 0.0°C. There were some sharp frosts, although days were often cloudy. Towards the end of the second week it became much milder. The high on the 14th was above 16°C. It became cold for a while at the end of the third week, but then the fourth week was sunnier,  with a high near 16°C. on the 25th.

April - Dry, sunny and rather mild.

The first week of April was unsettled, and on the 9th, over 6mm of rain fell and the temperature only reached 10.5°C. There was no measurable rain after the 9th, and during the second week it became warm and sunny for a while. On the 12th, the temperature exceeded 16°C., and on the 15th there was an exceptionally low relative humidity of just 10%. Cloudier, northeast winds occurred for a time after mid month, but during the last week skies were almost cloudless. 

May - Wet but rather sunny with temperatures slightly below normal.

There were some warm and sunny days early in May, although after a sunny day on the 4th, it became increasingly unsettled. On the 7th the maximum temperature was close to 22°C, but temperatures fell as the cyclonic pattern  of weather became established and brought showers, or longer spells of rain. On the 10th, nearly 19mm of rain was recorded, and on the 12th the maximum temperature was only 11.9°C. The changeable weather continued after mid-month.

June - Rather sunny with below average rainfall and slightly above average temperatures.

The first week of June was mostly very warm or hot, and the maximum temperature on the 6th exceeded 29°C. It became cooler during the second week, and on the 12th, over 4mm of rain fell, the first measurable rain of the month. The maximum temperature on the 12th was only 11.7°C. No further rain fell until the 30th, and although sunny spells occurred, there was no particularly warm weather. On the last day of June, thundery rain produced over 31mm.
July - Cool and rather dry with below average sunshine.

Although there was plenty of dry weather during July, it was generally unsettled and often rather cloudy and cool. On the 10th, nearly 15mm of rain fell but much of the rain was light. The 18th was a particularly cool day with an afternoon temperature of only 14.4°C. However, 3 days later there was a rare rather warm day with a maximum temperature approaching 25°C. The rather changeable weather persisted into the final week, although the last day of July was sunny.

August - Rather dull with temperatures and rainfall close to normal.

The month was changeable with large amounts of cloud at times. However, rainfal totalsl were mostly small, and temperatures were generally close to normal. A few cool days occurred, and on the 4th, the maximum temperature was only 16.0°C. During the last week there were several warm days. On the 28th, the afternoon temperature rose above 30°C., but then the short-lived heat wave broke down, and thundery rain totalled nearly 12mm on the following day. 

September - Dry with below average sunshine and near normal temperatures.

The first 3 weeks of September were rather cloudy and unsettled but amounts of rain were small and there were several bright and fairly warm days followed by warm and humid nights. The afternoon temperature on the 11th reached 24°C. On the 21st, over 10mm of rain fell and the weather became much cooler. There were sunny spells and a few showers with fresh northwest winds, and the maximum temperature on the 28th was only 12.9°C. 

October - Wet and rather mild with below average sunshine.

There was some pleasantly warm weather early in the month with sunny spells. The 2nd was sunny nearly all day, and the maximum temperature on the 4th was 19°C. There was some heavy rain at times during October but it seldom lasted long. However, on the 26th it rained for most of the day and over 21mm fell. It was cold, too, and the maximum temperature was only 8.3°C. On the following night there a grass frost as the air temperature fell below 2°C. 

November - Cold and rather dry with above average sunshine.

The beginning of November was mainly changeable and mild. On the 5th, over 21mm of rain fell, and the temperature on the 7th exceeded 12°C. The second week of the month was sunnier, and on the 8th it was sunny all day. However, it became colder, and the maximum temperature on the 11th was only 4.6°C. After mid month, it was generally dry and rather cold or cold with variable amounts of cloud and sunny spells. The first frost of the Autumn occurred on the 22nd.

December - Mild and sunny with slightly above average rainfall.

The first 3 weeks of December were changeable as Atlantic frontal systems crossed the country. Amounts of rain were mainly small with lengthy spells of sunshine between cloud bands. However, on the 5th over 9mm of rain fell. In the third week it became mild,  and maximum temperatures on both the 21st and 22nd were close to 12°C. Over, and after, the Christmas holiday it became grey, misty and rather cold. Highs on both the 26th and 30th were only 3.4°C.
