1949 Dry, Sunny and Warm. Good Summer.

Weather Notes:-
16th April - Maximum temperature of 29.4°C at Camden Square (London).
15th July - Over 100m of rain fell on this, St Swithin's Day, at March (Cambridgeshire).
5th September - Temperature reached 32.8°C. at Maldon (Essex).

The early part of January was unsettled, and on the 1st more than 10mm of rain fell. Temperatures were variable, and on the 3rd it was cold with a maximum of only 3.2°C. During the second week, it became generally dry, and for the remainder of the month fronts were mostly weak with plenty of dry and mild weather with bright or sunny spells. On the 14th, the temperature almost reached 12°C, but during the last week it was somewhat cooler with frosty nights.

February - Very sunny, mild and dry.

There was some cold, but mostly sunny, weather early in the month. On the 3rd, the maximum temperature only reached 3.7°C. There were many  frosty nights through February, but the harshest frosts occurred during the first half of the month. On the 5th, the minimum temperatures was below minus 5°C. Rain was mostly light throughout the month, with sunshine quickly returning between rain bands. However, on the 9th, over 7mm of rain fell.   

March - Dry and rather cold with below average sunshine.

There was some unsettled weather early in the month and snow fell as well as rain. On the 4th, over 9mm of rain was recorded, but generally amounts of precipitation were very small. It was cold early in March with some frosty nights, and the maximum temperature on the 6th was only 2.0°C. After the first week it became slightly milder, and during the last week there were a few pleasantly mild days. On the 26th the afternoon temperature rose above 17°C.

April - Mild, sunny and rather dry.

It was fairly mild at first but the beginning of the second week was cool, and on the 8th the maximum temperature was only 9.0°C.  There was plenty of sunshine, and around mid month it warmed up considerably. From the 15th to 17th the temperature rose above 21°C, with a maximum above 25°C on the 16th.The high was close to 19°C. on the 18th, but it then becamer cooler and unsettled for the rest of the month, and on the 28th nearly 9mm of rain fell.

May - Rather cool and wet with above average sunshine.

There was plenty of dry and bright weather during the first fortnight of May, but it was rather cool and breezy at times. On the 9th, the temperature only reached 10.4°C., and on the following night there was a ground frost. From the third week until the end of the month, it was generally warmer, although the weather was rather changeable at times. On both the 21st and 22nd the temperature rose above 20°C., but on the 24th nearly 18mm of rain was recorded.  

June - Very dry and rather warm with above average sunshine.

There was a cool and wet start to June. On the 1st, over 7mm of rain was measured, and the maximum temperature on the 3rd was only 14.8°C. Significant rain only fell on 3 days during the month, and after the 14th it was completely dry. Temperatures slowly rose, and although days were pleasantly warm some chilly nights occurred. During the last week it became very warm or hot with some warm nights. On the 27th, the maximum temperature was above 29°C.

July - Dry, sunny and warm

After a warm start to the month, it became rather cool and changeable towards the end of the first week. On the 7th, the maximum temperature was only 15.1°C. Warmer  weather returned on the 10th, and on the 12th the afternoon high was close to 30°C.   The heatwave ended with thunderstorms, and on the 16th over 17mm of rain was recorded.  Warm and sunny weather prevailed between the 21st and 28th, but the last 3 days became somewhat cooler and cloudier.

August - Dry, warm and sunny.

The early part of August was unsettled and, at times, fairly breezy. On the 2nd, around 17mm of rain fell, but there were several sunny days, and through the month there were only 8 days when measurable rain fell. On the 11th, the maximum temperature was only 18.5°C, but 4 days later the afternoon high was over 28°C. A warm spell developed from the end of the third week until the beginning of the last week of August with daily maxima typically in the mid 20s.

September - Very warm and dry with above average sunshine.

Pleasantly warm days occurred throughout this dry month, and although some days proved to be rather cloudy, there was generally plenty of sunshine. On the 4th, the temperature rose close to 30°C and it was sunny all day. On the following night the low was 18.2°C. Maxima on most days were between 20 and 24°C, but on the 21st it rained, 1 of only 6 days that measurable rain fell. The total was only just over 3mm but the maximum temperature was only 17.3°C.

October - Very wet and mild with above average sunshine.

The early part of October was mainly dry with sunny periods and there were several rather warm days. On the 3rd, the maximum temperature was close to 23°C. As the month progressed it became increasingly unsettled, and although mild or occasionally very mild at first, after nearly 30mm of rain fell on the 26th it became much colder. There was an air frost early on the morning of the 28th, and on the 30th the maximum temperature only reached 7.0°C.

November - Rather cold and sunny with below average rainfall.

The beginning of the month was cold, and on the morning of the 2nd the temperature fell below minus 2°C. It then became unsettled and quite mild for a while. On the 9th, the temperature reached 13.6°C, but despite regular rainfall  there were several sunny days. On the 10th, it was sunny,  but a band of rain moved in on the following day. Most of the rain was light, but on the 21st nearly 13mm fell. There was a cold end to the month with a high of only 5.5°C. on the 29th. 

December - Mild, rather dry and sunny.

The month was changeable, but amounts of rain were mostly small. Temperatures varied between rather cold and very mild, but mild days predominated. On the 3rd, the maximum temperature was 13.0°C., but 8 days later the high was only 4.0°C. Although measurable rain fell on 17 days during December, the only day that 10mm was exceeded occurred on the 14th when over 13mm was recorded. Christmas in 1949 was very mild with highs above 10°C.
