1952 Rather Cool, Sunny but Wet. Cold Autumn.
In the year that Princess Elizabeth became Queen after the death of her father, King George VI, compulsory identity cards were scrapped by the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, and the Agatha Christie play 'The Mousetrap' opened in a West End of London theatre, the start of a very long run. In the music world, the 'Hit Parade' was intoduced in the UK. The first 'Number One' was Al Martino with 'Here in my Heart'.
Weather Notes:-
29th March - More than 20cm of snow, driven along by strong northeast winds leading to 2m drifts, affected parts of southern and eastern England, particularly The Chilterns.
15th/16th August - Over 220mm of rain fell on the hills above Lynmouth (Devon) leading to flash flooding of the village and the loss of 34 lives.
9th December - The last of 5 days with fog in London. This fog, initially freezing, became very dense wet fog which led to many deaths and was directly responsible for the Clean Air Act enabled in 1956.
