1955 Dry and Sunny. A warm and dry late Summer
In the year that Anthony Eden became British Prime Minister after the resignation of Winston Churchill, Ruth Ellis became the last woman to be executed in Britain, and the first edition of the Guinness Book of Records was published. In the world of music, Slim Whitman with 'Rose Marie' spent 11 weeks at number one in the charts, and the top position was occupied for 5 weeks by Bill Haley and His Comets with 'Rock Around The Clock'.
Weather Notes:-
23rd February - The temperature fell to minus 25°C (-13F) at Braemar (Aberdeenshire) over around 60cm of powdery snow.
17th May -  Much of England had sleet or snow early in the day, and on the higher ground of northeast England depths reached 10cm for a while
18th July - Over 279mm of rain fell at Martintown (Dorset). Around 180mm fell at Dorchester and Weymouth (both Dorset) reulting in severe flooding.

January Rather cold and dull with below average rainfall.

The first week was mostly cold with some sleet and snow. It became milder during the second week, and on the 11th nearly 10mm of rain fell with the temperature rising above 11°C. It then became much colder with sharp frosts, and on the 13th the maximum temperature was only 1.2°C. After a dull and smoggy start to the third week, several centimetres of wet snow fell on the 16th, before the weather turned somewhat milder and became fairly dry.

February - Cold, rather dry and sunny.

The month began with mild and unsettled weather. On the 4th, over 11mm of rain fell, and on the 7th the temperature almost reached 12°C. It became colder at the beginning of the second week, and sleet or snow then fell on 15 days before the end of the month. Much of the snow was light and insignifcant, but from the end of the third week it turned very wintry. On the 26th, the temperature only reached 0.8°C. and in the last week some sharp frosts occurred. 

March - Very cold, sunny and dry.

The early part of March was very cold with a little snow but also with plenty of sunshine and frosty nights. On the 7th, the temperature only rose to 1.8°C. During the second and third weeks, dry weather predominated and temperatures slowly rose, although there were several frosty nights.  During the last week it was mild,  rather changeable, but still sunny at times.  On the 25th, the temperature rose above 17°C but on the same day 5mm of rain was recorded. 

April - Very dry, rather mild and fairly sunny.

The only frost of the month occurred on the night of the 1st/2nd, but generally the first week was unsettled. Amounts of rain were mostly very small, although nearly 3mm fell on the 7th. From the 9th until the 25th no measurable rain was recorded, and there were several mild days. However, on the 21st, the maximum temperature was only 11.1°C. During the last week, the weather became unsettled but warmer, and on the 29th the high was close to 20°C.

May - Cool and wet with above average sunshine.

Temperatures were close to normal during the first week and there was plenty of fine weather. During the second week it became cool and showery, and in the early hours of the 17th, rain turned to sleet for a time as the temperature fell below 2°C. The cool northerlies gave way to milder southwesterlies during the last 10 days. It was wet at times, and on the 27th, over 18mm of rain fell. However, in a sunny end to May the temperature reached 20°C. on the 30th.

June - Rather cool, dull and wet.

Although the weather was rather cloudy and cool, there were many dry days. Early in the month the weather was very variable. On the 4th, over 14mm of rain fell, on the following day there was almost unbroken sunshine, and on the 6th the temperature rose to 23°C. On the 9th, the temperature only reached 13.5°C, and when cloud cleared overnight the temperature fell below 5°C. The high was 23°C. again on the 15th, but the rest of the month was cool. 

July - Very dry, rather warm and sunny

After a rather cool start to the month, with a maximum temperature of 17.3°C. on the 3rd, it became warm  or very warm during the second week with long sunny periods. On the 14th, after a warm and humid night, thunderstorms broke out, but only 5mm of rain fell. On the 17th, the temperature rose above 30°C. but at the end of the third week values fell closer to normal. Nevertheless, there were only 5 days of measurable rain during the whole of July.

August - Very dry and warm with above average sunshine.

Temperatures were near, or rather above, normal during the first half of August, although some chilly nights occurred. On the 13th, the maximum temperature was 17.4° C. and nearly 10mm of rain fell, this was 1 of only 4 days during August when measurable rain fell, and on the 14th the last significant rain of the month occurred. It then became mostly very warm or hot.. On the 22nd the temperature rose above 30°C, and there were some warm and humid nights.

September - Rather sunny with below average rainfall and near normal temperatures.

The temperature rose above 25°C. on the 2nd, but rain fell, the first measurable precipitation for over a fortnight, and the weather then became somewhat cooler and rather unsettled. On the 9th, nearly 14mm of rain fell, and on the 14th the temperature failed to rise above 14.6°C. A chilly night occurred on the 18th/19th, but generally the second half of the month was fairly dry and at times quite warm. The 29th was an especially sunny,  and pleasantly warm,  day. 

October - Rather cold and sunny with above average rainfall

The first fortnight of October was mostly fine and occasionally pleasantly warm. On the 8th, the temperature rose above 19°C. The third week began fine, and there was a slight frost on the morning of the 18th. However, it became wet on the 19th with over 27mm of rain, and this was the beginning of an unsettled, and eventually, much colder spell. On the 30th, the temperature failed to rise above 7.8°C. and there was an air frost on the last night of the month. 

November - Very dry, rather mild and dull.

The early part of the month was changeable and mild. although the first morning was clear and frosty. On the 4th, more than 11mm of rain fell, and on the 6th the afternoon temperature reached. 16.3°C.  After the first 10 days, much of November was dry, fairly mild but with sunny days few and far between. There were a few colder days, and the occasional clear and chilly night, and on the last day of the month the temperature failed to rise above 5.3°C.

December - Mild, rather dry and sunny.

A series of weather systems crossed the area during December but rainfall was generally light. However, on the 14th, nearly 11mm of rain fell. There were sunny periods following the passage of cold fronts but temperatures were mostly well above normal. Prior to Christmas it was somewhat colder, and after a sharp overnight frost, the high was just 3.6°C. The last week became very mild with highs of 12.6°C. and 13.9°C  on the 26th and 28th respectively.
